New Delhi : Newly-elected President Draupadi Murmu will take oath of the country's highest constitutional office on Monday. Chief Justice of the Supreme Court NV Raman will administer the oath of office and secrecy to him as the 15th President. After that the new President will be given a 21-gun salute. Then there will be the President's address. Murmu won the presidential election by defeating the joint opposition candidate Yashwant Sinha. She will be the first to be born after independence and the youngest President to reach the top.

The swearing-in ceremony will take place in the Central Hall of Parliament at around 10.15 am. The ceremony will be attended by Vice President M Venkaiah Naidu, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla, state governors, chief ministers of all states, ministers, heads of diplomatic missions and members of parliament. After the ceremony in the Central Hall of Parliament, the President will leave for Rashtrapati Bhavan with her convoy. There he will be given an inter-service guard of honour.

Santhali saree is special

Draupadi Murmu will be the first tribal woman president. She can wear a traditional Santhali saree for the swearing-in ceremony. The saree has been brought by her sister-in-law Sukri Tudu. Sukri will attend the swearing-in ceremony along with her husband Tarinisen. Santhali sarees are worn by the women of the Santhal community on special occasions in eastern India. There is some stripes work on one end of these sarees.

Will be the 10th President to take oath on July 25

Draupadi Murmu will be the 10th President of the country to be sworn in on July 25. Since 1977, the President has been continuously taking oath on July 25. The first President of the country, Rajendra Prasad took oath on 26 January 1950. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan took oath on May 13, 1962. Two presidents, Zakir Hussain and Fakhruddin Ali Ahmed could not complete their term as they passed away.

The sixth President Neelam Sanjiva Reddy took oath on 25 July 1977. Since then, on 25 July, Giani Zail Singh, R. Venkataraman, Shankar Dayal Sharma, K.R. Narayanan, A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, Pratibha Patil, Pranab Mukherjee and Ram Nath Kovind took the oath of office on the same date.
