India-US Tariff War / From oil to dead economy... PM Modi replied to Trump in gestures

Amidst the tariff dispute between India and America, PM Modi replied to Trump from Kashi. Modi said that India will take decisions only in national interest. Oil purchases from Russia will continue and we will buy only what is necessary for the country. India will become the third largest economy.

India-US Tariff War: In recent times, tensions between India and the US seem to be increasing over tariffs. US President Donald Trump questioned India's trade relations with Russia and tried to put pressure through tariffs. On the other hand, Prime Minister Narendra Modi made India's stand clear while addressing a gathering in Kashi. He gave a befitting reply to Trump's statements, calling national interests paramount.

Trump's statements and pressure on India

US President Donald Trump objected to trade relations between India and Russia. He said, "India and Russia want to sink their economy, it doesn't matter to me. India's tariffs are the highest in the world." Trump announced a 25% tariff on imports from India and threatened additional punishment for buying oil and military equipment from Russia. After this, Trump claimed that India has stopped buying oil from Russia, which proved to be completely wrong.

PM Modi's answer: National interest first

Prime Minister Narendra Modi responded to Trump's statements while addressing a public meeting in Kashi. He said, "What we will buy and what not, will be decided on the basis of national interests." There will be no ban on India's purchase of oil and weapons from Russia. Modi clarified that India is independent in its economic policies and will give priority to its interests in the era of global instability.

Modi hit back at Trump's "dead economy" statement, saying, "India is soon going to be the third largest economy in the world." Referring to global economic instability, he said that India will have to be vigilant about its economic interests.

F-35 proposal and India's refusal

The US has been trying to sell F-35 fighter aircraft to India for a long time. This proposal was also made during the meeting with Trump at the White House in February 2025. However, India rejected this offer. At the Kashi gathering, Modi reiterated, "India will buy only that which involves our soil and the labor of our people." This statement reflects India's emphasis on indigenous production and self-reliance.

Trade with Russia continues

Rejecting Trump's claims about buying oil from Russia, Modi said that India will continue to buy oil and other strategic goods from Russia. This decision is important for India's energy security and strategic autonomy. India has always maintained a balance in its foreign policy, and this stance will remain firm despite Trump's threats.

Impact of tariff war

Trump's tariff policy and threats can increase tension in India-US relations. India is among the countries in the world that impose high tariffs on its imports, aimed at promoting domestic industries. India can also take retaliatory steps in response to Trump's 25% tariff, raising fears of a trade war between the two countries.
