International / Huge earthquake hits Perryville, Alaska

Alaska: The United States Geological Survey (USGS) reported Thursday that a strong earthquake measuring 8.2 on the Richter scale occurred 91 kilometres southeast of Perryville, Alaska. Shortly after the end of his term, the United States government issued a tsunami warning for southeast Alaska. The US Tsunami Warning System said in a statement that in the next three hours, some coasts may have a dangerous tsunami from this earthquake. 


To date, there have been no reports of casualties or property damage. 

On January 23, a magnitude 8.2 earthquake struck off the southern coast of Alaska, triggering a tsunami watch. The earthquake occurred in the Gulf of Alaska at 0931 GMT, 280 kilometres southeast of Kodiak Town. The epicentre was located 10 kilometres below the seabed. Since then, tsunami warnings have been issued in Alaska and the west coast of Canada.

 

Alaska is a part of the seismically energetic Pacific Ring of Fire.

Alaska becomes hit via way of means of a 9.2-importance earthquake in March 1964, the most powerful ever recorded in North America. It devastated Anchorage and unleashed a tsunami that slammed the Gulf of Alaska, the American west coast, and Hawaii.
