Israel Claims Death of Ali Larijani, Iran Rejects Reports

Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz has claimed the elimination of Ali Larijani, a top Iranian official, in a targeted strike. Iran has officially rejected these claims, maintaining that the Secretary of the Supreme National Security Council is safe. The strike reportedly occurred on Monday night based on intelligence.

In a significant escalation of regional tensions, Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz has claimed that Israeli forces have killed Ali Larijani, one of Iran's most influential political and military figures. According to reports from Al Jazeera, the strike was conducted on Monday (March 16) night, targeting Larijani's secret locations. However, Tehran has promptly dismissed these claims, asserting that the senior leader remains unharmed and active in his official capacity.

Israeli Defense Ministry Statement on the Operation

Defense Minister Israel Katz stated that the operation was carried out following precise intelligence regarding Larijani's whereabouts. Israeli media, citing sources within the Israel Defense Forces (IDF), reported that the strike was part of a broader strategy to neutralize high-value targets within the Iranian leadership. While the IDF is currently assessing the final outcome of the strike to confirm the death, Larijani had been identified as the primary coordinator for Iranian military operations following the reported death of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.

Iran Denies Claims and Issues Official Response

The Iranian government and Larijani’s office have labeled the Israeli claims as misinformation, while a statement from Larijani's office indicated that the Secretary of the Supreme National Security Council would soon release a message to the public. Notably, Larijani had posted on social media platform X as recently as Monday (March 16), sharing a letter addressed to Muslim nations. Iranian officials maintain that the leadership structure remains intact despite the ongoing military pressure from Israel and its allies.

IDF Claims Elimination of Basij Chief Gholamreza Soleimani

Parallel to the claims regarding Larijani, the Israel Defense Forces have also claimed the killing of Gholamreza Soleimani, the head of the Basij Force, while the Basij is Iran's largest paramilitary organization and plays a critical role in domestic security and military mobilization. The IDF stated that Soleimani was targeted in a separate operation. Similar to the Larijani case, Iran has not provided official confirmation regarding the status of the Basij commander.

Political Profile and Strategic Importance of Ali Larijani

Ali Larijani is a veteran politician who has served in various high-ranking positions, including Speaker of the Parliament and Secretary of the Supreme National Security Council. Appointed to his current role in June 2025, he was considered a close confidant of the Supreme Leader. Larijani was also on the US CENTCOM hitlist, with rewards previously announced for information leading to his location. His role became even more critical recently as he was reportedly making key administrative decisions during the transition of power in Tehran.

Iran's Succession Policy Amid High-Level Casualties

Since the initiation of strikes by Israel and the United States on February 28, approximately 40 top Iranian commanders have reportedly been killed. To counter the impact of these targeted killings, Iran has implemented a 'Four Successor' formula. This policy ensures that for every high-ranking position, four potential successors are pre-designated to take over immediately in the event of a vacancy. This system is designed to maintain administrative and military continuity even during periods of intense conflict and leadership losses.
