Apple iPhone: Global demand for Made in India iPhones has grown rapidly in the past few years. Most of the iPhones sold in the US and European markets are now being manufactured in India. But, a recent report has dashed the hopes of Made in India iPhone 17. A major decision by Apple's major supplier Foxconn has raised the possibility of delay in production of iPhone 17 in India.Foxconn's big decision: Return of Chinese workersAccording to a recent Bloomberg report, Foxconn has recalled hundreds of Chinese engineers and technicians involved in the iPhone 17 production line from India. More than 300 Chinese workers have returned from India in the last two months. At present, most of the employees working in Apple's factories in India are from Taiwan. However, Foxconn has not clarified the reason behind this decision. This move may have a direct impact on the production of iPhone 17 in India, leading to delays and technical challenges in the production line.Chinese government policies: Ban on technology transfer?Several reports are also claiming that the Chinese government has instructed its regulatory agencies and local administrations to limit technology transfer. This step has been taken to stop technology companies shifting to India and South Asian countries in particular. In recent years, global smartphone manufacturers, such as Apple, Google, Samsung and Nothing, have been setting up their manufacturing plants in countries like India, Indonesia and Vietnam instead of China. This policy of the Chinese government can pose new challenges for these companies.Make in India shinesThe Make in India initiative and Production Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme of the Government of India have encouraged global companies to manufacture in India. India has made rapid progress in the field of smartphone manufacturing since the COVID-19 pandemic. Apart from Apple, non-Chinese brands like Google, Nothing and Samsung are looking at India as their manufacturing hub. The quality and cost-effective production of iPhones made in India has made it a preferred choice in the global market.Impact on iPhone 17 launchThe iPhone 17 is expected to be launched in September 2025. But, Foxconn's decision may affect Apple's production plans. After the withdrawal of Chinese engineers and technicians, Apple will now have to increase its reliance on Taiwanese workers. This situation may affect the speed and quality of production, leading to delays in launch or other technical problems.Opportunities and challenges for IndiaThe Make in India initiative has played an important role in establishing India as a global manufacturing hub. But, the decisions of major suppliers like Foxconn and the policies of the Chinese government are posing new challenges for India. Apple and other companies will now have to focus on training local talent and enhancing indigenous technological capabilities. This will not only ensure continuity of production but will also help establish India as a technology hub in the long term.
