Maharashtra MLC Elections: Voting for 9 Seats on May 12, Uddhav Thackeray Faces Tough Battle

The Election Commission has announced elections for 9 Maharashtra Legislative Council seats on May 12. With terms of members like Uddhav Thackeray and Shashikant Shinde ending on May 13, 2026, the current assembly numbers suggest a difficult path for the opposition to retain multiple seats.

The Election Commission has announced the schedule for the elections to nine vacant seats in the Maharashtra Legislative Council. Voting for these seats will take place on May 12, from 9 AM to 4 PM. These nine seats in the Maharashtra Legislative Council are becoming vacant in May, prompting the commission to initiate the electoral process.

Election Schedule and Key Dates

According to the Election Commission, the nomination process will begin on April 23. The last date for filing nomination papers is April 30. Candidates can withdraw their nominations until May 4, 2026. Voting is scheduled for May 12, and the counting of votes will commence after 5 PM on the same day. The results are expected to be declared on May 12 itself.

List of Outgoing MLC Members

As per the press note issued by the Commission, the terms of nine MLCs are set to expire on May 13, 2026, necessitating these elections.

Current Strength of Maharashtra Assembly

The Maharashtra Legislative Assembly consists of 288 members.

Challenges for Uddhav Thackeray and Opposition

Given the current numerical strength in the Assembly, the path for former CM Uddhav Thackeray appears challenging. Due to the lower number of MLAs with the opposition, Uddhav Thackeray's Shiv Sena, the Congress, and Sharad Pawar's NCP aren't in a position to win even a single seat on their own strength. The opposition is currently in a position to win only one seat, while this raises significant questions about whether Uddhav Thackeray will be able to return to the Legislative Council.
