In a major political development in the national capital, the Delhi Police and the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) have detained All India Trinamool Congress (TMC) Chairperson Mamata Banerjee. The incident took place during a protest demonstration held at South Avenue in Delhi. According to the reports, following the detention of Mamata Banerjee, Arvind Kejriwal was also taken into custody by the Delhi Police, marking a day of intense police action against prominent political figures. The security forces intervened while the leaders were participating in a scheduled protest, leading to a significant confrontation at the site.

Details of the Detention at South Avenue

The protest at South Avenue saw the participation of several high-ranking TMC officials, while during the course of the demonstration, the Delhi Police and CRPF personnel moved in to detain the protesters. Along with Mamata Banerjee, 5 key leaders of the party were taken into custody. The list of detained individuals includes Derek O Brien, Dola Sen, Pratima Mondal, and Samirul Islam. All these leaders, including the TMC Chief, were placed into a prison van by the authorities. The police are currently in the process of transporting the detained leaders to a nearby police station for further legal formalities. The presence of a large number of security personnel from both the Delhi Police and the CRPF highlighted the scale of the operation at South Avenue.

TMC Questions Democratic Values

Following the detention of its top leadership, the All India Trinamool Congress (TMC) expressed its strong disapproval through a social media post on the platform X. The party raised serious questions regarding the conduct of the Delhi Police and the state of democracy in the country, while in its official statement, the TMC questioned since when it has become a common practice to arrest those who are conducting peaceful protests in a democratic setup. The party emphasized that instead of engaging in a dialogue during a peaceful protest, the authorities chose the path of arrest and detention, while this action, according to the TMC, raises grave concerns about the current status of democratic values and the right to dissent.

Message to the Central Government

In its social media communication, the TMC specifically tagged Prime Minister Narendra Modi and directed sharp criticism towards the central administration. The party referred to the leadership as the Mo-Shah duo and stated that while they may continue to cross boundaries, no government is above accountability. The TMC further remarked that no power remains permanent in a democracy. The party officially labeled the day of the arrests as a black day for democracy, while they concluded their statement by asserting that the struggle to protect democratic principles must never cease, regardless of the actions taken by the authorities. The detention of Mamata Banerjee, Derek O Brien, Dola Sen, Pratima Mondal, and Samirul Islam has sparked a heated debate over the handling of political protests in the capital.
