Maharashtra / More than 500 shops burnt in Pune due to fire in the market; pics surface

Pune: More than 500 shops were burnt to ashes in a major fire that broke out at Fashion Street market in Pune, Maharashtra, late Friday night, a fire brigade official said.

The situation was under control by 1:10 am, however, more than 500 shops and various good were charred by that time, Prashant Ranpise, Chief Fire Officer of Pune Municipal Corporation, said.

As many as 50 firefighters, 16 fire tenders and 10 other officials toiled to douse the fire, the officials said.

The official said a call for help was received around 9:30 pm from the cantonment area.

Fashion Street on MG Road in Pune is a famous window shopping destination that houses small outlets selling garments, shoes, goggles and other accessories.

In the past 15 days, this is the second fire incident that has been reported in the cantonment area. On March 16, a major fire broke out in Pune's Shivaji Market. At least 25 shops were gutted due to the blaze.
