Maharashtra | Former Maharashtra Home Minister Anil Deshmukh, jailed on corruption charges, fainted in the jail on Friday. The former minister has been rushed to JJ Hospital in Mumbai after he fainted. Deshmukh, lodged in Arthur Road Jail here in an alleged corruption case, felt dizzy and fainted, a jail official said.

The Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) leader complained of chest pain, he said. He reported that his blood pressure was found to be elevated and the ECG report was abnormal. Deshmukh is currently undergoing treatment at the hospital, the official said. Deshmukh was first arrested by the Enforcement Directorate in November 2021 and later by the Central Bureau of Investigation. Presently he is in judicial custody.

The then Mumbai Police Commissioner has made allegations

In March 2021, the then Mumbai Police Commissioner Parambir Singh alleged that Deshmukh had asked police officials to collect Rs 100 crore per month from restaurants and bars in the city. In April last year, while hearing a petition filed by a lawyer, the court had ordered a preliminary inquiry by the CBI. The CBI had registered an FIR against Deshmukh on the basis of its investigation.

Bail petition has also been rejected

Last month, former Maharashtra Home Minister Anil Deshmukh, who appeared for default bail in a special CBI court, had given a jolt. The court had rejected the bail application. Deshmukh wanted relief in the corruption case. The special thing is that the court rejected the petition of two more accused in the case.
