According to the US Geological Survey, the earthquake occurred in the central South Island, about 124 kilometers west of Christchurch, and its epicenter was at a depth of 11 kilometers underground. New Zealand's National Emergency Management Agency said there was no tsunami threat from the earthquake and there were no immediate reports of loss of life or property.

New Zealand is among the countries sensitive to earthquakes. The country lies on the 'Ring of Fire', a seismic fault that surrounds the Pacific Ocean, where earthquakes and volcanic eruptions are common. After the earthquake, there is a fear in the minds of people about more such shocks. Due to this, some people are still not ready to go inside their homes.
