Presidential election: The search for opposition parties looking for candidates for the presidential election is finally over. The opposition parties unanimously declared TMC leader Yashwant Sinha as their candidate. However, this time the opposition had to work hard to find a presidential candidate and a series of long meetings also took place.

Opposition hardly found candidate

The first meeting of the opposition parties regarding the presidential candidate was held on 15 June. All the 16 opposition parties present in this meeting proposed to make NCP supremo Sharad Pawar as the presidential candidate. But Sharad Pawar refused to contest the election citing his health. It is also being said that Pawar is a seasoned politician and he knows that victory is not possible in this election, that is why he refused to contest.

After this, in the same meeting, Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee proposed to field former Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Farooq Abdullah and Mahatma Gandhi's great-grandson Gopal Krishna Gandhi as candidates. But both of them flatly refused to be the candidate of the opposition.

Why did the three leaders refuse?

After all, why did all these three refuse to contest the presidential election? If sources are to be believed, the opposition parties know that their victory in this election is impossible because to win the presidential election any candidate needs 50% of the total votes. According to a leader of the opposition, he has the support of 18 parties and if all these are combined, the total vote is 43% while the government has 49% of the vote.

BJD and YSR Congress have about 8% votes, but the vote of these two parties is more likely to go in favor of the government. That is, the government has a total of 57% of the votes and the opposition has a total of 43% of the votes, so the defeat of the opposition candidate in the election is certain. But he does not want to give a walkover to the government's candidate. The opposition wants to make the government feel the unity and strength of the opposition. This is the reason why the opposition has fielded its candidate for the post of President.
