Chess World Cup: R Praggnanandhaa missed out on winning the FIDE Chess World Cup title. World number one player Magnus Carlsen defeated him in the finals and broke the hearts of crores of Indians. Pragyanand is the youngest player in the world to play the final of the World Cup. He gave a tough fight to Carlsen in the title match. After the initial 2 rounds ended in a draw, a tiebreak was played between the two on Thursday. Where in the first rapid game of 25 minutes, the world's number one player won in 45 moves and took a 1-0 lead with this.

Pragyanand could not return

The second 25 plus 10 tiebreak match was drawn after 22 moves. Praggnanand had a chance to make a comeback in this, but he missed it. After winning the first match, Carlsen played defending. Earlier, Pragyanand entered the final after defeating world number three Fabiano Caruana in the tiebreak in the semi-finals. He has also confirmed his place in the Candidates Tournament 2024.

  • World number three player Fabiano Caruana was defeated 3.5- 2.5 in the semi-finals.
  • In the final, Magnus Carlsen lost 0.5-1.5.
