IND vs ENG / Ravi Shastri made a big request for Shubman Gill, asked for 1095 days

After starting the Test series in England with a defeat, questions have been raised on Shubman Gill's captaincy. India lost the Leeds Test by five wickets. Former coach Ravi Shastri has defended Gill and appealed to the BCCI to keep him as captain for three years.

IND vs ENG: Indian cricket has entered a new phase after veterans like Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli and Ravichandran Ashwin retired from Test cricket. In this sequence, Shubman Gill was given the command of the Test team. However, Gill's captaincy did not start well on the England tour. England defeated India by five wickets in the Leeds Test to take a 1-0 lead in the five-match series. After this defeat, questions have been raised on Gill's leadership ability, but former Team India coach and veteran commentator Ravi Shastri has openly supported Gill.

Ravi Shastri made a special appeal to BCCI

In an interview to Wisden, Ravi Shastri clearly said that it would not be right to judge Shubman Gill immediately. He has appealed to the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) to give Gill the command of the Test team for at least three years i.e. 1095 days. According to Shastri, it is very difficult for foreign teams to win in England and in such a situation it is very important to give time to a young captain.

Series win in England is a big challenge

Shastri underlined the fact that India has not won any Test series in England since 2007. Also, the retirement of experienced players like Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma and Ashwin in the last six months is a big change for the team. In such a situation, Gill should be given adequate support for captaincy.

"Gill should prove himself as a batsman"

Ravi Shastri believes that batting is most important before captaincy. If Gill is not able to make his place as a batsman, then it would be justified to question his captaincy. But as long as he is scoring runs, he should be kept as the captain. He said, "If the batting is not strong before captaincy, then the pressure on the leadership increases further."

"If you give a little support, Gill will become a class captain"

Shastri feels that Shubman Gill has all the qualities to become a successful Test captain - all he needs is to give him constant support. He said, "If he can adapt himself according to the situation with experience, then he can definitely become a great captain. I will be disappointed if he is removed without giving him enough chance."

Next test in Birmingham

The second Test match will be played in Birmingham from July 2, and before that Team India is practicing hard on the field. Now it remains to be seen whether Gill is able to answer the critics with his captaincy and batting or not.
