Cricket / Ross Taylor, only cricketer to play 100 games in each int'l format, announces retirement

Cricket Desk: New Zealand cricketing colossus Ross Taylor has announced his retirement from international cricket. The veteran batter will play his last Test series against Bangladesh in January 2022, while the ODI series against Australia and The Netherlands next year will be his swansong in limited-overs cricket.

Taylor is arguably one of the greatest batters produced by New Zealand. The right-handed batting legend is the highest run-scorer for the Kiwis in Test match cricket (7584 runs), as well as ODI cricket (8581 runs).

Taylor took to Twitter to announce his retirement. The cricketing icon also stated that he is honoured to represent his country for 17 years at the international level.

“Today I’m announcing my retirement from international cricket at the conclusion of the home summer, two more Tests against Bangladesh, and six ODI’s against Australia & the Netherlands. Thank you for 17 years of incredible support. It’s been an honour to represent my country #234,” tweeted Ross Taylor.

Ross Taylor also added that good things have to come to an end. Adding that it is the right time for him to walk away from the sport, Taylor thanked his family and friends for their support. The 37-year-old concluded by stating that he will now focus on preparing for the upcoming New Zealand summer.

“But all good things must come to an end and the timing feels right for me. I want to thank my family, friends and all those who have helped me get to this point. There’ll be plenty of time for more thank-yous and reflections later in the season – but for now I want all my energy and focus to be on preparing and performing for the Black Caps this summer,” said Ross Taylor in a statement.
