PCB Chairman Warns Players Skipping PSL for IPL Participation

Pakistan Cricket Board Chairman Mohsin Naqvi has announced potential disciplinary actions against players opting for the Indian Premier League over the Pakistan Super League. Citing previous bans, Naqvi emphasized adherence to board regulations amid scheduling overlaps between the two major T20 leagues.

Warning of Disciplinary Action Against Players

Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) Chairman Mohsin Naqvi has issued a stern warning to international cricketers opting for the Indian Premier League (IPL) over the Pakistan Super League (PSL). According to Naqvi, the board will initiate action against players who withdraw from the PSL to participate in the IPL. This statement follows reports of several key players choosing to join IPL franchises for the upcoming season despite their existing commitments or draft status in the PSL.

Player Transfers and Board Response

In recent developments, Zimbabwe's Blessing Muzarabani has opted to join the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), leaving Islamabad United. Similarly, Sri Lanka's Dasun Shanaka has prepared to join the Rajasthan Royals instead of representing Lahore Qalandars. Mohsin Naqvi clarified that the board is taking these matters seriously. Speaking to ESPNcricinfo, he stated that a similar case occurred last year, and the board will proceed according to the established regulations this time as well.

The Precedent of Corbin Bosch's Ban

Naqvi cited the example of South African cricketer Corbin Bosch in his statement. In 2025, Bosch was a 'Diamond Pick' for Peshawar Zalmi but decided to play for Mumbai Indians in the IPL instead. Consequently, he faced a one-year ban from the league, while the PCB Chairman indicated that similar stringent measures could be implemented in the future to maintain the integrity and commitment levels required for the PSL.

Other Withdrawals and Personal Reasons

Several other players have also withdrawn from the upcoming PSL season. This list includes Gudakesh Motie, Jake Fraser-McGurk, Ottneil Baartman, and Spencer Johnson. However, most of these players have cited personal reasons for their decisions, while the board is reportedly evaluating these cases to distinguish between genuine personal emergencies and conflicts arising from participation in other T20 leagues to ensure fair treatment.

Scheduling Challenges and PSL Timeline

The next season of the PSL is scheduled to commence on 26 March, just two days before the IPL begins on 28 March. This narrow window has forced many international players to choose between the two leagues. Naqvi emphasized that the PCB couldn't afford to postpone the PSL as no other window was available in the international cricket calendar. He maintained that while some players are leaving, the league continues to attract high-quality talent from across the globe.
