RSS General Secretary Dattatreya Hosabale addressed the Hudson Institute in Washington, focusing on the evolving dynamics of India-US relations. He pointed out that significant misconceptions about India persist in the United States. Hosabale noted that India is often stereotyped as a land of poverty, slums, and snake charmers. However, he asserted that the reality is that India is a global technology hub and the world's fourth-largest economy. He lamented that these achievements are frequently overlooked in popular narratives.

Countering Negative Narratives and Defining Identity

During his address, Hosabale criticized the narratives that label India as a proponent of Hindu supremacy, or as being anti-minority, anti-women, and anti-modern. He stated that such narratives are constructed to overshadow the positive work being done in the country. Addressing questions about India's increasing Hindu identity and regional tensions, he clarified that from the RSS's perspective, Hindu identity is a civilizational identity rather than a religious one. He emphasized that the RSS has always focused on cultural values and civilizational ideals that aren't directly tied to any specific religion.

Regional Tensions and the Importance of Dialogue

Hosabale attributed periodic tensions to political interests and the misinterpretation of history. He expressed the RSS's belief that continuous and extensive dialogue with various groups would certainly help in clearing misunderstandings. He mentioned that the RSS is currently engaged in such dialogues with a group of minorities and their leaders. Regarding tensions with neighboring countries, he noted that several factors are at play, including the political leadership of those nations. He acknowledged that mutual coordination and trust have been damaged several times over the past few decades.

Strategic Partnership and the Way Forward

The RSS General Secretary specifically mentioned that the primary issue lies with one particular neighbor that was born from India's own womb, while he noted that while it's now a separate neighbor, many people are creating problems by following that country's lead. On the topic of India reaching its full potential, Hosabale stated that if the United States desires a strategic partnership with India, there is a need for a better relationship based on mutual trust and equal opportunities. He concluded by emphasizing that people-to-people ties must be further strengthened to ensure a successful partnership.
