The State Bank of India (SBI), the country's largest public sector lender, is preparing for a significant expansion of its operations and workforce. SBI Chairman C. S. Setty has officially announced that the bank is focusing on a large-scale expansion strategy during the current financial year. This move is expected to provide a substantial boost to employment opportunities for thousands of young individuals aspiring to build a career in the banking sector. The bank's plan isn't limited to recruitment alone; it also involves a strategic increase in its physical presence through the opening of hundreds of new branches across various regions of India.
Massive Recruitment Drive for 12000 Positions
According to the details shared by the SBI Chairman, the bank intends to hire approximately 11,000 to 12,000 new employees in the ongoing fiscal year. This recruitment drive will span across various levels, ranging from clerical staff to officer-grade positions. While the final number of hires may fluctuate slightly based on the actual retirement figures recorded during the year, the management remains optimistic about reaching the 12,000 mark by the end of the fiscal year. This initiative follows a period of strong hiring in the previous year as well.
Review of Previous Year Recruitment Statistics
The bank's annual report highlights that in the fiscal year 2025-26, SBI successfully recruited a total of 25,633 individuals. This large-scale hiring included 4,640 officers and 19,340 employees at the associate level. On top of that, the bank engaged 1,653 individuals as contractual staff to support its diverse operations. These figures underscore the bank's consistent efforts to maintain a strong and capable workforce to manage its vast customer base and extensive service portfolio.
Strategic Shift in IT Professional Hiring
While the bank continues to expand its general banking workforce, there is a notable shift in its strategy regarding Information Technology (IT) professionals. In the previous year, SBI had recruited 1,500 specialist IT officers to strengthen its digital infrastructure. However, for the current year, the bank doesn't have any major plans for large-scale hiring within the IT sector. The current focus has shifted towards strengthening the clerical and general banking cadres to ensure smooth day-to-day operations, while 45 lakh.
Mega Plan for 250 New Branch Openings
SBI already possesses one of the most extensive banking networks in the country, yet the management believes there is still significant room for growth in several regions, while the bank is specifically targeting areas where new residential colonies are being developed and districts that are becoming commercially active. Under this expansion roadmap, SBI has set a target to open between 200 and 250 new branches during the current financial year. The establishment of these new branches is aimed at providing better accessibility and convenience to customers, ensuring that the bank's services reach every corner of the developing landscape.
