Donald Trump: Amid the ongoing debate over immigration enforcement in the US, Donald Trump's controversial travel ban policy has once again come into effect. President Trump signed an executive order last Wednesday, banning citizens of 12 countries from entering the US with immediate effect. He has described this decision as being in the interest of national security, but it is still being criticized as before.Mainly impacts African and Middle East countriesThe new restrictions apply to countries like Afghanistan, Myanmar, Chad, Republic of Congo, Equatorial Guinea, Eritrea, Haiti, Iran, Libya, Somalia, Sudan and Yemen. Apart from this, restrictions have also been imposed on citizens of countries like Burundi, Cuba, Laos, Sierra Leone, Togo, Turkmenistan and Venezuela, especially those who are outside the US and do not have a valid visa.Conflict with the judiciaryThis new initiative of Trump has once again sparked a debate on the limits of executive powers. The policy, which has been implemented from today, is indefinite and no clear time limit has been set for its end. Federal courts have opposed this order and in some cases the Trump administration has already got a setback from the courts. The 2017 ban and its effectThis is not the first time Trump has taken such a step. In January 2017, during his first term, he banned citizens of seven Muslim countries—Iraq, Syria, Iran, Sudan, Libya, Somalia and Yemen—from coming to the US. This was widely called the “Muslim Ban” and there were protests against it in the US and around the world. However, the Supreme Court validated a modified version of this policy in 2018.Muslim countries targeted once againThe new ban also includes many Muslim-majority countries, which are raising questions about the nature of this order. Trump says that this step is not anti-Muslim, but to ensure the security of America. Despite this, his calls for an open ban on Muslims during his first presidential campaign have left his intentions questionable so far.
