Amidst the ongoing ceasefire between the United States and Iran, US Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth has issued a direct warning to Tehran. Hegseth stated that the United States is maintaining a close watch on Iran. Addressing the media in Washington, the Defense Secretary asserted that the US will continue its naval blockade of Iran for as long as necessary. He claimed that the US Navy is currently controlling traffic through the Strait of Hormuz, alleging that Iran no longer possesses a functional navy.
Status of Mujtaba Khamenei and China's Commitment
During the press briefing, Hegseth commented on the status of Iran's leadership, stating that Iran's Supreme Leader Mujtaba Khamenei is believed to be injured but alive. He further mentioned that the US would welcome other nations stepping forward to assist in matters regarding the Strait of Hormuz. In a significant revelation, the Defense Secretary claimed that China has provided assurances to the United States that it won't send weapons to Iran during the ceasefire period.
Military Readiness and Coordination with Israel
Issuing a stern warning to Tehran, Pete Hegseth declared that US forces are prepared to resume combat operations if Iran doesn't agree to a settlement. He emphasized that the US is aware of the military equipment Iran is attempting to export and is monitoring Tehran's actions closely. The press conference also featured General Dan Kane, Chairman of the US Joint Chiefs of Staff, and Admiral Brad Cooper of the US Central Command. Admiral Cooper noted that he has met with Israel's Chief of Defense, Lieutenant General Eyal Zamir, to ensure that both sides remain fully coordinated in their stance against Iran.
Previous Claims on Iran's Military Status
It's pertinent to note that following the ceasefire agreement, Pete Hegseth had previously claimed that Iran had "begged" for the truce. He had asserted that the Iranian military has been completely devastated and would remain incapable of engaging in war for several years to come.
