Bharatiya Janata Party leader Suvendu Adhikari has been sworn in as the Chief Minister of West Bengal. This marks a significant moment that has transformed the state's political landscape after decades of resistance to saffron politics, leading to the formation of the first-ever BJP government in the state, while along with Suvendu Adhikari, five other MLAs took the oath of office, including the BJP's firebrand leader Agnimitra Paul. A fashion designer turned politician, Agnimitra Paul is expected to be entrusted with major responsibilities in the Suvendu administration.
Profile of Agnimitra Paul
Agnimitra Paul is regarded as a firebrand leader, often compared to former Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee for her aggressive stance against opposition leaders, while the 51-year-old former fashion designer secured a resounding victory in the Asansol South Assembly seat, defeating All India Trinamool Congress candidate Tapas Banerjee by a substantial margin of 40,839 votes. This significant win has earned her a place in Suvendu Adhikari's cabinet, while according to her election affidavit, there are 23 criminal cases registered against her involving charges such as unlawful assembly, rioting, and violent protests. However, she has not been convicted in any case to date. Agnimitra Paul maintains that all cases filed against her are politically motivated.
Political Journey and Growth
Agnimitra Paul entered the political arena in 2019. She won her first election from the Asansol South Assembly seat in 2021, defeating prominent TMC leader Sayani Ghosh. In 2022, she contested the Lok Sabha by-election from Asansol but faced defeat. During the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, she contested from Medinipur but lost to TMC's Shatrughan Sinha. Despite these electoral setbacks, Agnimitra Paul remained resilient. She has now secured victory again from the Asansol South Assembly seat. Since joining the BJP in 2019, she has rapidly ascended within the party ranks, serving first as the head of the Mahila Morcha and later being appointed as the West Bengal State Vice President in 2026.
