BMW India has officially strengthened its presence in the luxury SUV segment with the introduction of the new BMW X1 Long Wheelbase (LWB). This new iteration of the popular X1 series is designed to cater to customers who prioritize rear-seat comfort and additional cabin space. 90 lakh rupees, the X1 LWB is currently available in a single, high-spec sDrive18i M Sport variant. While the petrol version gets the long-wheelbase treatment, BMW has confirmed that the diesel engine variant will continue to be sold in the standard wheelbase configuration in the Indian market.
Enhanced Dimensions and Superior Comfort
The most significant update in the BMW X1 LWB is its physical growth. The vehicle now measures 4,616 mm in length, 1,845 mm in width, and 1,641 mm in height. This makes it noticeably larger than the standard X1 previously sold in India. The wheelbase has been extended by 108 mm, bringing the total to 2,802 mm. Overall, the SUV is 116 mm longer than its predecessor. BMW has utilized this extra length primarily to enhance the experience for rear-seat passengers. According to the company, the new X1 LWB offers an additional 109 mm of knee-room for those sitting in the back. Also, the rear seat cushions have been lengthened by 15 mm to provide better thigh support, ensuring a more relaxed journey during long drives.
Powertrain and Performance
5-liter three-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine. This engine is capable of producing 156 hp of maximum power and 230 Nm of peak torque. Compared to the previous petrol X1, the new model sees a significant power bump of 22 hp, while the torque remains consistent at 230 Nm. The engine is mated to a sophisticated 7-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission that sends power exclusively to the front wheels. This setup is designed to offer a balance between smooth city driving and spirited highway performance, staying true to BMW's driving dynamics.
Exterior Design and Premium Features
The exterior of the X1 LWB reflects BMW's modern design philosophy. It sits on stylish 18-inch alloy wheels and features the iconic BMW signature kidney grille at the front. The lighting setup includes adaptive LED headlights paired with sharp LED daytime running lamps. Other notable exterior elements include satin-finish roof rails, flush-fitting door handles that improve aerodynamics, and a panoramic glass roof that adds to the cabin's airy feel. The rear is characterized by a shark-fin antenna, a sporty rear spoiler, and sleek LED tail lamps. Inside, the dashboard layout remains familiar to the standard X1 but is packed with high-end features. It includes electrically adjustable front seats with a memory function for the driver, dual-zone automatic climate control, rear AC vents, and a powered tailgate for convenience.
Advanced Technology and Safety
The cabin is a hub of modern technology, featuring a 12-speaker Harman Kardon premium audio system for an immersive sound experience. It also comes equipped with the BMW Digital Key, Park Assist Plus, and Reverse Assistant to aid in tight parking situations, while the infotainment system supports integrated navigation, connected car technology, and voice assistants, with the capability for over-the-air (OTA) software updates. For safety, BMW has left no stone unturned, equipping the X1 LWB with 8 airbags, ABS with EBD, Dynamic Stability Control, and Traction Control. It also features a Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS), electronic parking brake, front and rear parking sensors, a rear-view camera, and ISOFIX child-seat mounts, while the inclusion of a full ADAS (Advanced Driver Assistance Systems) suite further enhances the vehicle's safety profile. In the Indian market, the BMW X1 LWB will compete directly with the Mercedes-Benz GLA, Audi Q3, and Volvo XC40.
