On Thursday, July 23, the Indian bullion market witnessed a slight softening in the prices of gold and silver, despite the significant global turmoil and escalating tensions between the United States and Iran. The domestic market saw a decline in the rates of both 24-carat and 22-carat gold following a stern warning from US President Donald Trump. The President cautioned that Iran's basic infrastructure could be destroyed in the event of attacks on ships passing through the Strait of Hormuz. This geopolitical friction has created a complex environment for precious metals, leading to the current price adjustments observed in the trading sessions.
MCX Gold and Silver Performance
On the Multi Commodity Exchange (MCX), gold for delivery on August 5 was seen trending at 144127 rupees per 10 grams. This represents a significant drop of 1550 rupees per 10 grams, which is approximately a 1 percent decline. The silver market also faced a downward trend, while silver for delivery on September 4 crashed by 4294 rupees, marking a decline of nearly 2 percent. Following this sharp correction, the price of silver was recorded at 222704 rupees per kilogram. These movements reflect the immediate reaction of the domestic commodity markets to the evolving international security situation.
Crude Oil Surges and US-Saudi Nuclear Deal
While precious metals experienced a slowdown, the energy sector saw a different trend. Crude oil prices jumped by up to 2 percent following reports of an unidentified attack on an oil tanker near Saudi Arabia. Consequently, Brent crude reached 96 dollars per barrel. Amidst this, political equations in the Middle East are changing rapidly. The United States and Saudi Arabia have entered into a historic civil nuclear cooperation agreement. Under this deal, American companies will provide modern nuclear technology to Saudi Arabia, while the Trump administration has described this move as a step toward strengthening the relationship between the two nations.
International Market Trends on Comex
The decline in precious metal prices was also evident in the international market. On the Comex exchange, both gold and silver have been trading in the red since Thursday morning. By afternoon, gold on Comex fell by 58 dollars per ounce to trend at 4093 dollars per ounce. Similarly, silver prices also faced pressure, dropping by more than 1 dollar to be seen at 59 dollars per ounce. These international fluctuations occurred even as mediator countries proposed a 10-day ceasefire to the US and Iran. However, despite the proposal, airstrikes from both sides have not ceased, maintaining a high level of uncertainty in the global markets.
