In a significant diplomatic breakthrough aimed at de-escalating tensions in the Middle East, Israel and Lebanon have agreed to extend their current ceasefire for an additional 45 days. C, while uS State Department spokesperson Tommy Pigott confirmed the development, stating that the agreement was reached following two days of meaningful and productive discussions between the involved parties. This extension provides a critical window for further diplomacy, with the next round of political negotiations already scheduled to take place on June 2 and 3.

Diplomatic Progress in Washington

The fragile peace agreement between Israel and the Lebanese group Hezbollah was originally set to expire this Sunday, raising fears of a renewed escalation of hostilities. However, the successful conclusion of the Washington talks has temporarily averted this crisis. Tommy Pigott, speaking on behalf of the US State Department via social media, expressed optimism regarding the future of these discussions, while he emphasized that the United States hopes these ongoing talks will foster a permanent peace between the two nations, based on the full recognition of each other's sovereignty and territorial integrity, alongside the establishment of genuine security along their shared border.

Pentagon Security Session and Future Roadmap

The peace process is moving forward on multiple tracks, addressing both political and security concerns. According to reports from Al Jazeera, a dedicated security session is scheduled to commence at the Pentagon on May 29. This session will see the participation of high-ranking officials from both Israel and Lebanon, focusing on the technical and military aspects of border stability. The US State Department has characterized the peace talks concluded on Friday in Washington as successful, reiterating that the political dialogue will continue on June 2 and 3 to build upon the current momentum and work toward a more sustainable resolution.

Casualties and Ground Reality in Southern Lebanon

Despite the diplomatic progress in Washington, the situation on the ground remains volatile. Al Jazeera, citing Lebanese state media, reported that new Israeli strikes in southern Lebanon on Friday resulted in the deaths of seven individuals. Data from the Lebanese Health Ministry indicates a grim toll, with a total of 2,951 people killed in Israeli attacks since March 2. Amidst the ongoing peace negotiations, Iranian state media Press TV reported that Hezbollah conducted 17 operations on Wednesday, targeting Israeli military positions, personnel, and vehicles in southern Lebanon, highlighting the continued military friction despite the ceasefire extension.

Hezbollah Military Operations and Equipment Damage

The 17 operations conducted by Hezbollah involved a variety of sophisticated weaponry and tactics. Press TV detailed that these actions included eight drone strikes, five missile or rocket attacks, one artillery strike, and the launch of a guided missile. Hezbollah claimed significant success in these operations, asserting that they targeted and hit two military vehicles, two Merkava tanks, one armored vehicle, and two military bulldozers. Plus, the group claimed that its fighters executed a pre-planned ambush near the outskirts of the town of Haddatha, utilizing explosives along with light and heavy weaponry and artillery fire against Israeli troops.

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) have also provided updates on the military situation. On Thursday, via their official Telegram channel, the IDF stated that an interceptor missile was fired toward a suspicious aerial target identified in an area where IDF soldiers were operating in southern Lebanon. The military noted that no sirens were activated during the incident, in accordance with standard protocols. The IDF further reported that in recent hours, Hezbollah fired an anti-tank missile and several mortar shells that landed near areas where Israeli troops were active in southern Lebanon. While the 45-day extension offers hope for peace, the continued exchange of fire underscores the complexity of the situation.
