The political landscape of Jaipur Municipal Corporation has witnessed a dramatic turn of events following the recent municipal elections. Amidst the intense maneuvering for board formation, the case of Mohammad Rais Khan, the Independent Councilor from Ward Number 109, has become a central point of discussion. The controversy began when images surfaced showing Rais Khan being welcomed into the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) fold. On Thursday evening, BJP State President Madan Rathore claimed that the party's family was expanding as he presented Rais Khan with the traditional BJP scarf, signaling his official membership. However, this claim was short-lived as the situation took a complete U-turn within a few hours.

The Denial and Counter-Claims

Shortly after the BJP's announcement, Mohammad Rais Khan issued a statement categorically denying his induction into the party. He described the reports of him joining the BJP as false and misleading. Khan clarified his stance by stating that he remains deeply rooted in the Congress ideology and will continue to stay with the Congress party. According to his version of events, his meeting with the BJP State President was merely a courtesy call. He alleged that during this meeting, he was presented with the BJP scarf and the incident was later publicized incorrectly to suggest he had switched sides, while to reinforce his point, Khan shared a video on social media where he was seen wearing a Congress scarf, reiterating that while he was offered a place in the BJP, he didn't accept it.

BJP Stands by Its Induction Claim

On the other side of the political divide, BJP State President Madan Rathore has maintained his original stance, insisting that Mohammad Rais Khan is indeed with the BJP, while rathore dismissed the video released by the councilor as fake. Providing further details, the State President claimed that Rais Khan had met him as recently as Friday morning. According to Rathore, after their meeting, the councilor departed for the Ajmer Dargah. The BJP had earlier released photographs showing the induction ceremony, where the caption stated that the BJP family was growing with the inclusion of the Independent Councilor from Ward Number 109. The party emphasized that the membership was granted formally by the State President himself.

The Significance of Independent Candidates

This entire episode highlights the critical role that independent candidates are playing in the aftermath of the municipal elections. The struggle to secure the support of independents has become a high-stakes game for both major parties. In the elections held for the 150 wards of the Jaipur Municipal Corporation, the initial results saw the BJP winning 78 seats, while the Congress secured 53 seats, and 15 seats went to independent candidates. Following re-polling in four wards, the Congress tally increased to 57 seats, while the BJP remained at 78. Although the BJP appears to have a clear majority on paper, the ongoing efforts to reach out to independent councilors like Rais Khan suggest that the political battle for control over the municipal board is far from over.

Ward 109 Election Details

The political importance of Mohammad Rais Khan is rooted in his significant victory in Ward Number 109. Contesting as an independent candidate, Khan managed to secure a total of 5150 votes. His performance was strong enough to grant him a victory margin of 558 votes over his nearest rival. This substantial mandate has made him a key figure in the post-election negotiations. As the two major political parties continue to claim his allegiance, the situation remains a testament to the volatile and competitive nature of local body politics in Rajasthan's capital city.
