In a significant escalation of the movement for the restoration of student union elections, a large number of students gathered near the 22 Godam Pulia in Jaipur on Friday. The protesters attempted to march towards the Rajasthan Legislative Assembly (Vidhan Sabha) to register their demands directly with the government, while however, the police administration had already put in place stringent security measures to prevent the students from reaching the high-security zone. The deployment included a comprehensive three-layer barricading system along with personnel from the local police force and the Special Task Force (STF).
Security Measures and Confrontation
The situation turned tense as the students tried to break through the barriers. Due to the heavy barricading, the students were unable to proceed further towards the Assembly. This led to a heated confrontation and significant scuffles between the police and the protesting students. The police used force to maintain order and ensure that the crowd didn't bypass the security perimeters established at 22 Godam. The physical struggle between the security forces and the youth continued for a considerable duration as the students remained adamant about their march.
Background of the Agitation
The call for the Assembly siege wasn't a sudden development. About 10 days ago, students at the university campus had issued an ultimatum to the government, demanding the restoration of student union elections by August 21. They had clearly stated that if their demands weren't met by this deadline, they would proceed with the siege of the Legislative Assembly. Following this announcement, student leader Neeraj Khichad undertook a tour of various universities and colleges across the state to mobilize students and integrate them into the movement. This extensive outreach resulted in the large gathering seen at 22 Godam on Friday.
Detentions and Police Action
During the protest, the police took decisive action to disperse the crowd. Student leader Neeraj Khichad, along with two other student leaders, was taken into custody. Following these detentions, the police moved to clear the remaining students from the site. For a long time, the remaining protesters stayed back, demanding the immediate release of their detained leaders. The students emphasized that the government must take their demands seriously and restore the democratic process of student union elections immediately.
Statements from Student Leadership
Prior to his detention, student leader Neeraj Khichad addressed the gathering, asserting that student union elections are a fundamental right of the students. He warned that if the government doesn't grant this right, the students will take actions that could shake the very foundations of the government's power. Khichad also directed sharp criticism toward the Higher Education Minister, Dr. Premchand Bairwa. He stated that he doesn't recognize him as the Higher Education Minister because, in his view, the minister is unable to take independent decisions. Plus, Khichad accused the current BJP government of following the same patterns as the previous Congress administration. He claimed that the youth of the state and the country are filled with resentment against the government and are now protesting without fear to secure their rights.
Unique Protest with Kanwar
In a unique turn of events, some students associated with the university chose a religious path to express their demands. They arrived at the protest site carrying a Kanwar, intending to visit the temple of Lord Shiva to pray for the restoration of student union elections. While the police initially tried to stop these students midway, they were eventually allowed to proceed with their Kanwar, whereas the other protesters were halted at the barricades, while the student leaders concluded the day with a stern warning, stating that if the government fails to restore the elections, the agitation will be intensified and continued in the coming days.
