A tragic road accident in Jaisalmer, Rajasthan, has resulted in the martyrdom of a young Indian Army officer, Major Hamza Arif. The incident occurred late Thursday night when the Army vehicle they were traveling in collided with a camel on the road, while the impact was so severe that the SUV overturned multiple times and was dragged for a significant distance, leading to fatal injuries for the Major and serious injuries to two other officers.
Details of the Fatal Collision
The accident took place at approximately 12:30 AM on Thursday night in the Thaiyat area, which falls under the jurisdiction of the Sadar police station in Jaisalmer. Major Hamza Arif, aged 26, was returning to the Army station after completing his duties. He was accompanied by two of his colleagues, Lieutenant Ayushman and Lieutenant Abhinav Rathore. The officers were traveling in a Tata Safari SUV belonging to the Army.
As the vehicle approached the vicinity of the Army station, a camel suddenly appeared on the road. Due to the speed of the vehicle and the suddenness of the animal's appearance, the driver didn't have enough time to react or maneuver the vehicle away. The SUV collided head-on with the camel, triggering a violent sequence of events.
Severity of the Impact
According to eyewitness accounts and preliminary reports, the collision was extremely high-impact, while after hitting the camel, the Tata Safari overturned approximately four to five times. The momentum was so great that the vehicle continued to slide and was dragged along the road for nearly 100 meters before finally coming to a halt. The SUV was completely mangled and destroyed due to the repeated rollovers and the friction of being dragged on the asphalt.
The sound of the crash was loud enough to alert nearby residents and Army personnel stationed in the area. They immediately rushed to the spot to initiate rescue operations, while the scene was one of chaos as the rescuers worked to extricate the three officers from the crushed remains of the vehicle.
Casualties and Medical Condition
All three officers were immediately rushed to the Army Hospital for emergency medical treatment. Despite the best efforts of the medical team, Major Hamza Arif was declared dead upon arrival. The 26 year old officer had sustained critical injuries during the multiple rollovers of the vehicle. Major Hamza Arif hailed from the state of Madhya Pradesh.
The other two officers involved in the accident, Lieutenant Ayushman and Lieutenant Abhinav Rathore, are currently undergoing treatment at the Army Hospital. Their condition has been described as serious. The medical staff is closely monitoring their recovery as they battle the injuries sustained in the horrific crash.
A Personal Tragedy
The death of Major Hamza Arif is particularly heart-wrenching as he had recently started a new chapter in his personal life. It has been reported that the Major had gotten married only about one month ago. The news of his untimely demise has sent shockwaves through his family in Madhya Pradesh and among his colleagues in the Indian Army. A wave of mourning has spread across the military establishment in Jaisalmer following the loss of the young officer.
Investigation by Authorities
The local police and the Military Police have launched a joint investigation into the circumstances surrounding the accident. ASI Jagdish Charan of the Sadar police station stated that the primary cause of the accident appears to be the sudden appearance of the camel on the road, which left the driver with no room for evasion. However, authorities are looking into all possible angles to understand the exact sequence of events and to determine if any other factors contributed to the severity of the crash. The investigation aims to clarify the conditions under which the accident occurred and whether any preventive measures could have been taken.
