Mamata Banerjee Silenced? TMC Chief Speaks Only Two Words at INDIA Alliance Press Meet

The political influence of Trinamool Congress (TMC) supremo Mamata Banerjee appears to be facing a dual challenge, both within her home state of West Bengal and on the national stage within the INDIA alliance. Following a defeat in the West Bengal assembly elections and a significant internal split within her party, Banerjee's once-dominant voice seems to have softened, while this shift was palpable during a recent high-level meeting and subsequent press conference of the INDIA alliance held at the Constitution Club in New Delhi on Monday. The leader, who has historically been one of the most vocal and assertive figures in opposition politics, remained strikingly quiet throughout the proceedings, contributing only two specific words during the entire media interaction.

Diminishing Stature in the INDIA Alliance

Observers noted that Mamata Banerjee's demeanor during the Delhi visit was uncharacteristically subdued. In previous gatherings of the INDIA alliance, she was often at the forefront, actively shaping the narrative and leading discussions. However, on Monday, she sat silently beside Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge, while the seating arrangement saw Kharge in the center, with Mamata Banerjee to his right and Rahul Gandhi to his left. Other prominent leaders like Akhilesh Yadav, Omar Abdullah, and Tejashwi Yadav were also seated in close proximity. Despite her prominent position on the dais, Banerjee chose not to address the media directly, leaving the bulk of the communication to the Congress President.

The Internal Crisis within Trinamool Congress

The backdrop to this quietude is a deepening crisis within the Trinamool Congress. The party, which is still reeling from its assembly election loss, is now facing a major rebellion at the parliamentary level. Reports indicate that while Mamata Banerjee was in the national capital to attend alliance meetings, a significant rift emerged within her parliamentary party. As many as 20 TMC Members of Parliament have reportedly written a formal letter to the Speaker of the Lok Sabha, claiming the formation of a separate group. This internal fracture suggests that Banerjee's control over her own party members is under severe strain, which may be contributing to her diminished influence within the broader opposition coalition.

The Five-Point Resolution and Mamata's Brief Intervention

5 minutes, Mallikarjun Kharge outlined the five key resolutions adopted by the 25 participating parties of the INDIA alliance. The first point involved sending a formal letter to the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court regarding the SIR issue. The second point was a collective demand for the resignation of the Union Education Minister, while the third point focused on a demand for the central government to convene an all-party meeting to discuss the current economic situation, unemployment, inflation, and issues facing farmers. It was during the explanation of this third point that Mamata Banerjee made her first brief intervention. As Kharge was listing the topics for the all-party meeting, Banerjee whispered the word "Atrocity" to him, prompting him to include the issue of atrocities in the list of demands.

Coordination and Future Strategy

The fourth point of the resolution stated that the INDIA alliance would hold meetings every 2 months, with the next gathering scheduled to take place in Hyderabad. The fifth point detailed a coordination strategy for the upcoming Monsoon Session of Parliament, where opposition leaders will meet every morning at a designated leader's residence to synchronize their efforts. Kharge also mentioned that while Uddhav Thackeray and Hemant Soren weren't physically present at the meeting, they were in full agreement with the 5 points. At this juncture, Mamata Banerjee made her second and final contribution of the press conference by saying the word "Virtually," clarifying that the two leaders had participated in the meeting through virtual means.

Allegations of Forced Defeat and Security Concerns

Despite her silence during the public press conference, Mamata Banerjee was more expressive during the internal meeting of the alliance. She reportedly claimed that the Trinamool Congress was "forcibly defeated" in the West Bengal assembly elections and warned other alliance partners that what happened in Bengal could potentially happen in other states as well. Also, she raised the issue of an attack on Abhishek Banerjee in Sonarpur, highlighting security concerns and political violence. Notably, representatives from the DMK and the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) were absent from this particular meeting, while as the press conference concluded, Banerjee was the first leader to exit the venue, leaving before journalists could pose any questions, a move that political analysts suggest reflects her current defensive political positioning.
