Opposition Raises Concerns Over Session Duration
Leader of Opposition Tika Ram Jully expressed strong reservations about the government's intentions regarding the session. He alleged that the ruling party is attempting to avoid discussions on critical issues affecting various sections of society, including students, youth, women, employees, laborers, and the Dalit community. Jully argued that the assembly session shouldn't be shortened under the pretext of upcoming elections. He specifically demanded detailed discussions on matters related to students and schools, which he deemed vital for the public interest.
Allegations Against Ministers and the UCC Issue
Further intensifying his critique, Tika Ram Jully claimed that government ministers are hesitant to provide answers to questions raised in the house. He also targeted the government on the issue of the Uniform Civil Code (UCC). The opposition has formally requested that the assembly session be extended to last between 20 and 25 days to ensure all matters are thoroughly debated. However, Jully noted that the government's current stance suggests a desire to conclude the session within a very limited timeframe.
Government Asserts Readiness for Debate
In response to the opposition's allegations, Government Chief Whip Jogeshwar Garg stated that the government has already provided information regarding the potential business of the house during the all-party meeting. He acknowledged the opposition's demands for discussions on various topics but noted that the final duration of the session would be decided by the Assembly Speaker in consultation with the government, especially considering the upcoming elections in the state. Garg indicated that the session is likely to continue until August 25.
Counter-Challenge to the Opposition
Garg dismissed the opposition's claims that the government is running away from debate. He asserted that the ruling side is fully prepared to address every issue raised on the floor of the house. He challenged the opposition to remain present and engage in the discussions rather than staging walkouts. Plus, addressing the opposition's demand for a discussion on the Ram Mandir donation controversy, Garg confirmed that the government is ready to answer all questions related to this subject. As the session begins on August 20, the state expects heated exchanges over education, UCC, and other significant public interest issues.
