The first day of the monsoon session of the Rajasthan Assembly witnessed intense political drama as the ruling party and the opposition clashed over the singing of Vande Mataram. The controversy erupted when Congress MLAs were found absent from the house during the initial proceedings, while the ruling party immediately seized the opportunity to accuse the opposition of intentionally avoiding the national song, leading to a heated exchange of words outside the assembly hall.
Ruling Party Raises Questions on Opposition Absence
As the session commenced, the absence of Congress members during the singing of Vande Mataram became a focal point for the ruling party. Government representatives questioned the patriotism of the opposition, suggesting that their non-attendance was a deliberate move to skip the traditional recital. This accusation set the stage for a major political confrontation, with the ruling side claiming that the opposition was disrespecting national traditions.
Tika Ram Jully Rebuts Allegations with Historical Context
Responding to the accusations, the Leader of the Opposition, Tika Ram Jully, dismissed the claims as baseless and misleading. He emphasized that the Congress party has a long-standing tradition of honoring Vande Mataram. Jully pointed out that since the era of Mahatma Gandhi, Jawaharlal Nehru, and Sardar Patel, the national song has been an integral part of Congress conventions and official programs. He questioned how the BJP could suddenly claim ownership over the song or accuse the Congress of disrespecting it, asserting that the party has always respected Vande Mataram and will continue to do so in the future.
Allegations of a Pre-planned Conspiracy at the Assembly Gate
The Leader of the Opposition leveled serious counter-allegations against the ruling party, claiming that the Congress MLAs were victims of a well-planned conspiracy. Jully explained that when the MLAs arrived at the Rajasthan Assembly, they were stopped at the gate they usually use for entry, while he stated that at that moment, they didn't understand why they were being barred from entering. However, after hearing the ruling party's accusations regarding Vande Mataram, it became clear that the gate closure was a deliberate attempt to keep them out of the house during the song. Jully argued that if the gates had not been closed, the MLAs would have been present in the house on time.
Privilege Motion and Concerns Over Democratic Rights
Tika Ram Jully announced that the Congress party would be filing a privilege notice against the act of stopping elected representatives from entering the assembly, while he described the incident as a serious violation of the privileges granted to MLAs. Jully further alleged that the government is imposing restrictions on both public representatives and the media to hide its failures and alleged corruption. He compared the situation to being stopped while going to school, stating that such restrictions on entering the assembly are unacceptable in a democracy, while he termed the government's actions as a cover-up for their wrongdoings and demanded the withdrawal of such restrictive measures.
Demand for Discussion on Public Welfare Issues
The Leader of the Opposition urged the government to move beyond political controversies and focus on the real issues affecting the people of Rajasthan. He stated that the public wants the assembly to discuss matters such as education, employment, law and order, and the safety of women, while jully insisted that the government must provide answers regarding the state of the education system, the lack of jobs for the youth, and the rising crime rates in the province. He concluded by saying that the assembly should be a platform for addressing the problems of the common man rather than a place for political conspiracies.
