The political atmosphere in Ranchi reached a boiling point on Monday as students intensified their protest against alleged irregularities in the JPSC and JSSC examinations. The demonstration, which has been ongoing for several days, saw a significant escalation when the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) officially joined the cause, leading to a high-voltage drama outside the residence of Chief Minister Hemant Soren. Leader of the Opposition Babulal Marandi and BJP State President Aditya Sahu, along with several other party leaders and workers, were detained by the police after they staged a sit-in protest at the Chief Minister's gates, demanding a high-level investigation into the recruitment process.
Detention of Top BJP Leadership
The protest outside the Chief Minister's residence was led by former Chief Minister Babulal Marandi and Aditya Sahu. The BJP leaders, surrounded by a large number of supporters, raised slogans against the state government and held placards with messages such as Stop playing with the future of students and Recommend a CBI inquiry into JPSC exam irregularities. As the situation grew tense, the Ranchi police moved in to clear the area, taking Marandi, Sahu, and several other activists into custody, while following his detention, Babulal Marandi lashed out at the Hemant Soren administration, accusing it of trying to divert public attention from the core issues. He stated that while the students are rightfully continuing their protest, the government is using diversionary tactics instead of addressing the systemic corruption in recruitment.
Demands for CBI Probe and Criticism of CID
A central theme of the protest is the demand for a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) probe into the JPSC, JSSC, and CGL examinations. Babulal Marandi emphasized that the youth of Jharkhand have lost faith in state-run investigative agencies. He dismissed the ongoing CID investigation as a mere facade, designed to protect influential individuals. Marandi pointed out that students have been on a hunger strike at the stadium for the last 14 to 15 days, yet the government has remained indifferent to their plight. According to the BJP leadership, only a CBI inquiry can uncover the full extent of the alleged scams and provide justice to the thousands of candidates who have been affected by these irregularities. Aditya Sahu echoed these sentiments, alleging that the state government is effectively selling jobs meant for poor and deserving students. He challenged the government to recommend a CBI probe if it has nothing to hide, suggesting that the refusal to do so stems from a desire to maintain the benefits of power.
Student March and Breaking of Barricades
While the political leaders were being detained at the CM's residence, a massive wave of students took to the streets for an Assembly Gherao march. The students gathered in large numbers near the Old Assembly building and began a peaceful march toward the New Assembly building. However, the situation turned confrontational when the protesters reached the police cordons. Demonstrating their frustration, the students managed to break through the police barricades near the Old Assembly building as they pushed forward toward their destination. The march highlighted the deep-seated anger among the student community regarding the 14th JPSC exams and other recruitment tests. So far, 19 individuals have been arrested in connection with the alleged irregularities in JPSC exams, but the protesters maintain that these arrests only scratch the surface.
JMM Claims Political Instigation
In response to the escalating protests, the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) has accused the opposition of instigating the students for political gain. JMM MP Mahua Maji stated that a meeting was held on Sunday between a student delegation and state ministers, where it was claimed that 98 percent of the students' demands had been accepted. Maji suggested that while the students initially seemed satisfied, certain political parties are now pushing them to continue the agitation. She explained that the remaining 2 percent of the demands pertain to an examination result that was delivered following orders from the Supreme Court and the High Court. Since many individuals have already secured jobs based on that result, Maji argued that the government doesn't have the legal authority to cancel that specific exam without a fresh court order, while she urged the students to call off the march and recognize the steps already taken by the administration.
Government Measures and House Arrests
The Jharkhand government has defended its stance by highlighting the concessions it has made to the protesters, while the administration has agreed to cancel the 14th JPSC examination and has proposed an Enforcement Directorate (ED) investigation into the alleged financial irregularities associated with the tests. Plus, the government has announced the establishment of a fast-track court that will be mandated to file a chargesheet within 90 days to ensure speedy justice. Despite these announcements, the BJP remains unconvinced. BJP Jharkhand unit spokesperson Pratul Shahdeo claimed that he and several other leaders were placed under house arrest as early as 7 AM on Monday to prevent them from participating in the protest. The clash between the government's claims of resolution and the opposition's demand for a CBI probe continues to keep the state's political and social climate highly volatile.
