The Saharanpur district of Uttar Pradesh witnessed intense political drama on Tuesday as Kairana Member of Parliament (MP) Iqra Hasan engaged in a fierce confrontation with the local police. The dispute originated from a murder case involving a youth from the Kashyap community in Jasala village, located in the Shamli district. Seeking justice for the bereaved family, MP Iqra Hasan reached the Saharanpur DIG Range office along with the victim's family members to demand immediate and effective action in the case. However, the situation quickly escalated into a major uproar outside the DIG office, creating a tense atmosphere that lasted for several hours.
Tension at the DIG Office and Women's Police Station
During her visit to the DIG office, Iqra Hasan alleged that the senior officials left the premises without fully listening to the grievances of the victim's family, while this perceived indifference sparked significant anger from the MP and her supporters. As the protest intensified, the administration deployed additional police forces to maintain order, while in a move that further fueled the fire, the police took the MP to a women's police station, where she was reportedly kept for a considerable amount of time. Even at the women's police station, the MP's anger didn't subside, leading to a heated verbal exchange with the female station in-charge. During this time, when the police offered her water, she flatly refused to accept it. She was eventually allowed to leave after approximately 10 minutes.
Police Action and Detention of SP Leaders
Upon leaving the women's police station, the MP raised serious questions regarding the police's conduct. She stated that it's inappropriate for public representatives to be taken to a police station simply for raising the demand for justice for a victim's family, while the news of the MP being taken to the station spread rapidly, causing resentment among Samajwadi Party workers, many of whom began gathering near the women's police station. Meanwhile, the police took action against those accused of blocking traffic and creating a ruckus outside the DIG office. Former minister and Samajwadi Party leader Mangeram Kashyap, along with 5 other individuals, were taken into custody. The police also initiated the process of filing a formal case regarding the incident.
Confrontation at Sadar Bazar Police Station
SP City Vyom Bindal clarified that legal action was being taken for obstructing traffic and affecting law and order outside the DIG office. Following this, MP Iqra Hasan reached the Sadar Bazar police station to protest against the detention of members of the Kashyap community under sections related to disturbing the peace. Accompanied by her supporters, the MP had a prolonged and sharp argument with SP City and other police officials. She demanded the immediate release of the detained individuals and subsequently sat on a dharna inside the police station premises. During the discussion, she told the officials that if the administration took correct action, leaders wouldn't need to step forward. She expressed her deep dissatisfaction with the treatment of the victim's family, noting that those seeking justice were being sent to jail.
The MP's Defiant Stand
In the midst of the heated debate, Iqra Hasan took a defiant stand against the police pressure, while " Currently, a large gathering of Samajwadi Party workers and supporters of Iqra Hasan remains at the Sadar Bazar police station. Supporters are stationed outside the station premises, prompting the police to remain on high alert in the area. Meanwhile, police officials have officially denied reports of Iqra Hasan's arrest, clarifying that she's there to protest the detention of others.
