US President Donald Trump has announced the suspension of 'Project Freedom' amidst escalating tensions with Iran, a move being described as a strategic surrender, while since the beginning of the conflict, Trump has taken three significant U-turns. Initially, on February 28, Trump claimed that a US attack would lead to a coup in Iran. During that period, it was reported that Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei was killed in an attack, though the US didn't succeed in its ultimate objective. Later, on March 7, Trump declared there would be no ceasefire talks with Iran, a stance he couldn't maintain for long.

The Launch and Halt of Project Freedom

In early April, the US President announced the launch of 'Project Freedom' to clear the blockade in the Strait of Hormuz. The operation commenced on Sunday, April 3, under the supervision of the US military, aimed at safely extracting trapped ships. However, within just 48 hours, Trump announced the termination of the project. According to US media outlet NBC, this sudden halt was a result of intense pressure from Saudi Arabia. Despite the operation, the blockade of Iranian ships had continued during those 48 hours.

Saudi Arabia Denies Airspace and Military Bases

Saudi Arabia took a firm stand by refusing the US permission to use its airspace and military bases for the operation. Expressing dissatisfaction, Saudi officials stated that any outbreak of full-scale war would directly harm Gulf nations, while saudi Arabia communicated to Iran that they seek a diplomatic settlement rather than military escalation. This refusal to provide logistical support forced the Trump administration to reconsider its military strategy in the region.

Iranian Retaliation and Regional Impact

In response to the US operation, the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) of Iran threatened severe counter-actions. During this period, Iran launched several attacks on the UAE and was reportedly preparing for strikes against Saudi Arabia, while facing the risk of a broader regional war and the lack of support from Saudi Arabia, President Trump personally stepped forward to announce the end of Project Freedom. Trump cited the possibility of negotiations with Iran as the primary reason for halting the military operation.

The refusal of Saudi Arabia to cooperate has compelled the United States to limit its military maneuvers in the Gulf. President Trump has now clarified that the decision to stop Project Freedom was taken to facilitate dialogue with Iran.
