A pile-up involving 12 vehicles on a foggy Delhi-Jaipur highway on Saturday morning left two people dead and a dozen injured, the police said.

The accident occurred on Saban Chowk on National Highway 8 that connects Delhi and Jaipur near Haryana’s Rewari district.

The injured were rushed to various hospitals in Rewari, officials said, as police reached the spot to investigate the accident.

Bawal police station in-charge, Neeraj Kumar, said rescue operations have started and that poor visibility due to dense fog had led to the accident.

“A traffic jam has been caused due to the vehicles’ piling up. The police and administration are getting the damaged vehicles removed from the accident site to clear up the traffic jam,” a police official said, according to news agency ANI.

Several road accidents are reported across the northern region of the country as dense fog leads to low visibility. Disruption in road, rail and air traffic caused by winter fog has become routine in northern India.

The weather office has predicted that the cold wave and dense fog will continue until the end of this year.
