In a significant escalation of political tension in West Bengal, Trinamool Congress (TMC) MP and Mamata Banerjee's nephew, Abhishek Banerjee, was attacked by unknown individuals in Sonarpur. The incident occurred while the senior TMC leader was visiting the residence of a party worker in the area. According to reports, the situation turned volatile as the attackers threw eggs and stones at the MP, and in the ensuing scuffle, his clothes were also torn. The sudden nature of the assault led to a state of chaos and panic at the location.

Security Measures and Immediate Response

As the attack unfolded, the security personnel accompanying Abhishek Banerjee acted swiftly to protect him. To ensure his safety from the projectiles being thrown, the security guards placed a helmet on his head and formed a protective human chain around him. He was then carefully escorted away from the site of the incident. Despite the heavy security presence, the attackers managed to reach close enough to cause physical damage to his attire and pelt him with objects.

Political Sloganeering and Allegations

During the incident, several individuals identified as BJP workers were reportedly present at the scene, while they were seen shouting slogans of "Chor-Chor" (thief-thief) directed at Abhishek Banerjee. The Trinamool Congress leadership has officially blamed the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) for the assault, claiming that their workers were responsible for the physical violence, while this incident has further intensified the already heated political atmosphere in West Bengal, with both parties trading accusations.

Abhishek Banerjee's Reaction and Serious Allegations

Following the attack, Abhishek Banerjee made several serious allegations against the opposition. He stated that the entire incident was a pre-planned and sponsored act by the BJP. Expressing his anger, he said, "You can see the condition I've been put in. This is their style of democracy. You can see that the police aren't present anywhere, while " He emphasized that the entire sequence of events was captured on camera and would serve as evidence for future legal proceedings.

Legal and Administrative Recourse

Abhishek Banerjee announced his intention to take the matter to the highest authorities. He stated that he would inform the High Court about the attack and also bring the matter to the attention of the Governor of West Bengal. "I will definitely approach the court," he asserted, indicating that the TMC wouldn't let the incident pass without a legal challenge, while he also raised concerns about the lack of administrative support during his visit.

Security Lapses in Sonarpur

Sonarpur, located in the South 24 Parganas district near Kolkata, became the center of this political storm. Banerjee alleged that despite informing the authorities in advance about his visit, adequate security wasn't provided to him. He took a firm stand at the location, stating that he wouldn't leave until the police and security forces ensured proper safety. He further alleged that there were attempts to demolish houses and that the attack was a direct attempt on his life, while he noted that the helmet he wore was the only reason he escaped a major head injury.

Context of Post-Poll Visits

The attack comes in the wake of the West Bengal assembly election results declared on 4 May. Since then, there have been numerous reports of violence against TMC workers in various regions. Abhishek Banerjee has been touring different areas to meet with the families of affected party workers. The incident in Sonarpur occurred during one such visit. In response to the attack, local TMC workers organized immediate protests at the site, challenging the opposition and declaring that the party would continue its fight for the people despite such cowardly acts.
