India's Space Policy 2023 was welcomed in the joint statement issued from the White House. In this statement, NASA and ISRO's decision to increase mutual cooperation and training of Indian astronauts by NASA was also appreciated. In this joint statement, the White House said that commercial cooperation between the US and Indian private sectors in the space economy will be increased.

What is space policy 2023

India has prepared a defined plan for space, the aim of which is to increase private sector participation in space sectors and to enhance and focus on space research being conducted by ISRO. Apart from this, a roadmap for environmental protection, public awareness and scientific discoveries has also been decided, the space policy has been prepared with the help of scientists and experts, which has been approved by the Committee on Security of the Cabinet.

What are its objectives?

In the new policy, emphasis has been laid on increasing the role of the private sector in space activities. In this, incentives will be given for preparing rockets, launch vehicles, data collection and satellites.

  • Private companies in the space sector will also be able to use ISRO's facilities at very low fees.
  • The aim of the space policy is to increase the Indian space industry, it is estimated that by 2030, this industry can reach 60 billion US dollars.
  • India will work on this policy so that it does not have to depend on foreign sources for data and images of the Earth, currently India's security agencies obtain this data from foreign sources only, due to this India has to spend more and others. There is also dependence on the country.
  • Bringing space sector self-reliance is also an objective of the policy, in fact the transponders sending signals to Indian homes are still hosted from foreign satellites.
  • The aim of the space policy is also to promote space entrepreneurship, so that the youth of India can prove themselves in the fields of space and other technologies.
Different responsibilities

In the Space Policy, the functions and responsibilities of the Indian Space Research Organization, Indian National Space Promotion and Authority i.e. IN-Space and New Space India Limited have been decided.

  • NSIL will conduct strategic activities in the space sector
  • IN-SPACe will act as an interface that will be a bridge between ISRO and NGOs
  • ISRO will focus on research and development with new technologies, systems.
  • According to the policy, NSIL will take the responsibility of ISRO's mission operators.
Share in the economy will increase

Till now the contribution of space economy in the Indian economy is only 2 percent, the objective of the new policy is to increase it to 10 percent. Apart from this, the possibility of increasing satellite manufacturing capacity has also been expressed. According to the policy, India's satellite manufacturing market can reach up to US $ 3.2 billion by the year 2025. In the year 2020 it was 2.1 billion US dollars.
