The 'Daily Star' has reported, citing diplomatic sources, that Bangladesh Prime Minister Tarique Rahman may conduct his first official visit to India between August 20 and August 25. Although the specific dates for Tarique Rahman's visit are still under negotiation between Dhaka and New Delhi, both sides are working closely to align their schedules. According to the 'Daily Star', diplomatic sources indicated that this proposed visit is being seriously considered as both parties have expressed a strong interest in holding a bilateral meeting, while previously, there were challenges in finalizing a suitable time for both leaderships, but those hurdles are now being addressed.

A diplomatic source in New Delhi informed the 'Daily Star' that while both sides have been keen on a bilateral visit, scheduling remained a primary issue. After considering various timelines, top officials from both countries are reportedly close to agreeing on dates between August 20 and August 25. The report further mentioned that two specific sets of dates are currently under consideration: August 20-21 and August 21-22. The final dates are expected to be confirmed once the Indian High Commissioner in Dhaka, Dinesh Trivedi, resumes his duties, while however, it's important to note that there has been no official confirmation from the Ministry of External Affairs regarding these specific dates yet.

Context of Diplomatic Tensions and Sheikh Hasina

This development comes at a time of significant diplomatic activity. Indian High Commissioner Dinesh Trivedi held a one-on-one meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi in New Delhi on August 11. This meeting took place just a day after the High Commissioner had met with Tarique Rahman in Dhaka, while if the visit is confirmed, it will be Tarique Rahman's first trip to India since assuming office in February. The proposed visit is particularly significant given the recent diplomatic tensions between Dhaka and New Delhi. These tensions have been fueled by public statements made by Sheikh Hasina from India, where she has been residing since being ousted from power following a student-led uprising in 2024.

The diplomatic atmosphere has been further complicated by demands from the Bangladeshi side. According to a statement released by the Bangladesh Prime Minister's Office, Bangladesh has expressed hope that India will expedite the process of extraditing Sheikh Hasina, while these diplomatic dialogues are occurring in the wake of a virtual press conference held by former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on August 5 in New Delhi. This event was organized by the 'Foreign Correspondents' Club of South Asia' to mark the second anniversary of her removal from power following the 2024 student-led uprising. In response to the controversy surrounding Sheikh Hasina's virtual program, India has sought to distance itself from the event, while during a media briefing, Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal emphasized that the Indian government had no role in the program involving Sheikh Hasina in the national capital. He clarified that the event was organized by a "private media entity" and stressed that New Delhi doesn't endorse any views expressed during that program. This clarification was aimed at addressing the concerns raised by the current Bangladeshi administration and maintaining the focus on the upcoming bilateral engagements between the two countries.
