New Delhi: Political strategist Prashant Kishor took a veiled dig at Congress leader Rahul Gandhi saying that leadership of the Congress is not the divine right of an individual that too when the party has lost more than 90 per cent elections in the last 10 years.

This statement comes after West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee also took a swipe at the Wayanad MP saying “you can’t be abroad most of the time”.

Taking to his Twitter, Kishor said that the idea and space that Congress represents is vital for a strong opposition but opposition leadership must be decided democratically.

After meeting Sharad Pawar in Mumbai on Wednesday, the TMC chief had called for fighting the BJP unitedly and said “what is UPA? There is no UPA”.

Reacting to this, Congress leaders said the political party that continues to think about its gains and personal ambitions cannot take on BJP just by criticising Rahul Gandhi.

Congress also said that such posturing will prove counter-productive and help the ruling party at the Centre.

During her interaction with members of civil society, Banerjee claimed she had suggested to the Congress that an advisory council of prominent personalities from civil society be set up to give a direction to the opposition, but it was “in vain”.

Criticizing Mamata Banerjee, Leader of Opposition in Rajya Sabha Mallikarjun Kharge said that the aim of the grand old party is to defeat BJP while some people are only helping the ruling party at the Centre.

Mamata Banerjee is absolutely wrong that the UPA does not exist. It is also wrong to launch personal attacks on Rahul Gandhi. Mamata Banerjee's allegation that Rahul ji is not visible anywhere is wrong,” he added.

Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury also alleged that Mamata Banerjee and PM Modi were working together to weaken the Congress and defend their own interests.
