New Delhi: 46 years ago, on 25 June 1975 India found itself plunged into a grim situation as then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi announced a state of Emergency. For the next 21 months, the country remained in what many have dubbed the 'darkest period in Indian democracy' - marked by a massive crackdown on civil rights and political opposition, human rights violations and more.On Friday, as the country marked 46 years of the Emergency, Prime Minister Narendra Modi took a walk down memory lane, "The dark days of Emergency can never be forgotten. The period from 1975 to 1977 witnessed a systematic destruction of institutions," he tweeted.Sharing an Instagram post by the BJP's official handle on his Twitter feed, the Prime Minister also slammed the Opposition Congress for their role in the events of 1975. "This is how Congress trampled over our democratic ethos. We remember all those greats who resisted the Emergency and protected Indian democracy," he wrote sharing the link.The post in question took a look at the various curbs that had been enforced during the Emergency - from a ban on Kishore Kumar songs to quotes by Mahatma Gandhi and Rabindranath Tagore."Let us pledge to do everything possible to strengthen India’s democratic spirit, and live up to the values enshrined in our Constitution," Modi added.
