In a significant administrative move ahead of the upcoming elections, the Election Commission of India (ECI) has ordered the immediate transfer of 12 senior police officers in West Bengal. The reshuffle affects high-ranking officials within the Kolkata Police and the West Bengal State Police. This decision is part of the commission's efforts to ensure a fair and transparent electoral process across the state.
According to official reports, the transfers involve officers from crucial departments such as the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) and the Special Task Force (STF). The Election Commission has directed the state government to implement these changes with immediate effect, ensuring that the new appointees take charge of their respective divisions without delay.
New Roles for Soma Das Mitra and Sudip Sarkar
Among the most notable changes is the transfer of Soma Das Mitra, who was previously serving as the DIG in the Criminal Investigation Department (CID). She has now been appointed as the Joint Commissioner (Crime) of the Kolkata Police. Her extensive experience in criminal investigation is expected to be utilized in managing the crime wing of the city police during the sensitive election period.
Similarly, Sudip Sarkar, who held the position of DIG (Personnel), has been reassigned to a key administrative role. He has been appointed as the Joint Commissioner (Headquarters) of the Kolkata Police. In this capacity, Sarkar will be responsible for the internal administration, logistics, and coordination of the city's police force, which is vital for maintaining order during large-scale public events.
Restructuring of Intelligence and Special Task Force
The Election Commission has also focused on the intelligence and specialized units of the police force. Debasmita Das, the DIG of the Special Task Force (STF), has been transferred and appointed as the Joint Commissioner (Intelligence) of the Kolkata Police. The intelligence wing plays a critical role in monitoring security threats and gathering information to prevent any untoward incidents during the polls.
Plus, the commission has replaced the Deputy Commissioners (DC) of several key divisions in Kolkata, including the North, South, East, and South-East divisions. These divisions are considered strategically important due to their population density and political activity, while the reshuffle aims to bring in fresh leadership to these sensitive zones.
New Deputy Commissioners for Strategic Divisions
To strengthen ground-level policing, the Election Commission has appointed new Deputy Commissioners for various sectors of Kolkata, while vSR Anantnag has been designated as the DC (South), while Pradeep Kumar Yadav has taken over as the DC (North). These officers will be responsible for overseeing law and order in some of the most prominent areas of the city.
On top of that, Saikat Ghosh, who was serving as the DC of the Bhangar Division, has been moved to the South-East Division as its new Deputy Commissioner. Prashant Chaudhary, the SP of the Anti-Insurgency Force, has been appointed as the DC (East) of the Kolkata Police, while these appointments are intended to enhance the operational efficiency of the police force in maintaining public safety.
Impact on State Police Districts and CID
The scope of the Election Commission's action extends beyond the city of Kolkata. Officials stated that the commission has also ordered transfers in several other police districts and commissionerates across West Bengal. This state-wide reshuffle is a standard procedure adopted by the ECI to ensure that administrative officials remain neutral and that the electoral process isn't influenced by long-standing local postings.
According to officials, the primary objective of these transfers is to maintain the integrity of the administrative machinery. The Election Commission continues to monitor the security situation in West Bengal closely, and further adjustments in the administrative setup may occur as the election dates approach to ensure a peaceful environment for voters.
