Mungeli: A newborn baby abandoned in a field in Chhattisgarh was protected by a mother dog for the night before being rescued by locals.

A photo shared online showed the infant lying next to a mother dog and her litter of 6-7 pups.

According to reports, the baby girl was left in a field without any clothes in the Saristal village of Lormi in Mungeli district. Her umbilical cord was still attached

When villagers found the infant after hearing her cries, they first saw some stray dogs wandering nearby. But soon, they realised a mother dog protected her for the night.

The child was found without any injuries alongside a litter of puppies.

The baby was rushed to a nearby hospital after ASI Chintaram Binjhwar reached the field in Lormi village with a task force team, said reports.

The child was referred to The Child Line Project and named Akanksha. Meanwhile, the police are searching for the family of the newborn.

“We had come out for work and at 11 am we saw that there is a newborn baby girl was lying in the village amid dogs. Then, we informed the health department. After that, the newborn was taken to the hospital,” Munnalal Patel, local sarpanch representative, told ETV Bharat.

The story was shared on Twitter by IPS officer Dipanshu Kabra. He wrote (translated from Hindi): "I was upset after reading the news. The girl has been taken to the hospital by the police, the investigation of the case is going on. If you are suffering from the thinking of discrimination between son and daughter, then you are not fit to be a parent."

“The culprits should get strict punishment under the law. Stop such sins, give up orthodox thinking, consider son and daughter equal,” the tweet added.
