The Indian cricket team is currently dominating the three-match ODI series against Afghanistan on home soil. After the first two matches, Team India has secured a 2-0 unbeatable lead, showcasing a clinical performance in both departments. A significant highlight of this series has been the emergence of young fast bowler Gurnoor Brar, who made his international debut and immediately caught everyone's attention with his disciplined bowling. Having earned his spot through consistent performances in domestic cricket, Gurnoor has proven to be a vital asset for the team in the absence of senior pacers.
Impactful Debut in Dharamshala and Lucknow
Gurnoor Brar's journey in international cricket began at the picturesque Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association Stadium in Dharamshala, while in his debut match, the 6 feet 5 inches tall pacer utilized the conditions effectively to claim 3 wickets, putting the Afghanistan batting lineup under immense pressure. He continued this momentum into the second ODI held in Lucknow, where he once again picked up 3 wickets, bringing his total tally to 6 wickets in just two matches. His ability to extract bounce and maintain a consistent line has been the talk of the cricketing fraternity.
The Transition from Domestic to International Cricket
Speaking to the news agency PTI, Gurnoor Brar shared insights into his preparation and the mindset required to excel at the highest level, while he emphasized that for him, making it to the India-A squad was a massive milestone. According to Gurnoor, the pathway is clear: performing well in the Ranji Trophy leads to selections in the Duleep Trophy, Irani Cup, and eventually the India-A team. He expressed his immense joy upon being selected for India-A, noting that it served as the perfect stepping stone for his international debut.
Gurnoor mentioned that his approach to international cricket remained similar to how he bowled in the Ranji Trophy. He stated that he focused primarily on his pace, maintaining the right line and length, and ensuring he could swing the ball effectively, while "For me, bowling in international cricket was quite similar to how I used to bowl in Ranji matches. I just focused on my speed, the right line and length, and getting the ball to swing," Gurnoor remarked during his interaction.
Learning from the Best in the IPL
The young pacer also credited his stint in the Indian Premier League (IPL) for his rapid development, while as a member of the Gujarat Titans franchise, Gurnoor had the opportunity to share the dressing room with some of the world's finest fast bowlers. He mentioned that the environment at Gujarat Titans was highly conducive to learning. He specifically highlighted the guidance he received from Kagiso Rabada, Mohammed Siraj, and Ishant Sharma. Observing their work ethics and technical nuances helped him refine his own skills before stepping onto the international stage.
Looking Ahead to the 2027 World Cup
With the 2027 World Cup in sight, the Indian team management has already begun its preparations, and Gurnoor Brar appears to be a key part of those long-term plans. Despite his successful start, the pacer remains grounded and hungry for more. He admitted that while he's happy with his 6 wickets so far, he believes there is room for improvement. "I could have performed even better, and I will strive to do so in the upcoming matches," Gurnoor added. The third and final ODI of the series is scheduled to take place on 20 June at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai. As India looks for a clean sweep, all eyes will once again be on Gurnoor Brar to see if he can continue his wicket-taking streak.
