The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has implemented a major organizational reshuffle across several key states, including the national capital. In a significant move, Harsh Malhotra has been appointed as the new President of the Delhi Pradesh BJP, while this appointment comes as part of a broader strategy by the party leadership to strengthen its organizational structure in four different states. Harsh Malhotra, who currently serves as a Member of Parliament from East Delhi, will take over the responsibilities from the outgoing president, Virendra Sachdeva. The transition marks a new chapter for the Delhi unit as it prepares for future political challenges under Malhotra's leadership.
Harsh Malhotra: A Profile of Experience and Leadership
Harsh Malhotra's political journey is characterized by his steady rise through the party ranks and his extensive experience in various administrative roles. In the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, he secured a victory to become a first-time Member of Parliament representing the East Delhi constituency. His candidacy was a notable decision by the party, as he was fielded in place of the former cricketer and MP Gautam Gambhir. Beyond his legislative duties, Malhotra is also a key member of the Union Council of Ministers, currently serving as the Minister of State in the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, while this dual role as both a central minister and a state party president underscores the high level of trust the BJP leadership places in his capabilities.
Before his elevation to the national stage, Harsh Malhotra served the party in several critical capacities within the Delhi organizational framework. He has previously held the position of General Secretary for the Delhi BJP, where he played a vital role in party coordination. His experience in local governance is equally significant; he served as the Mayor of the East Delhi Municipal Corporation (MCD) between 2015 and 2016. His journey in electoral politics began at the grassroots level in 2012, when he won the municipal councilor election from the Welcome Colony ward in East Delhi. This progression from a local councilor to a Union Minister and now the State President provides him with a comprehensive understanding of Delhi's political landscape.
New Leadership Appointments in Tripura, Punjab, and Haryana
The organizational changes announced by the BJP extend to three other states, reflecting a nationwide effort to revitalize state units. In Tripura, the party has entrusted the leadership to a young and dynamic face, Abhishek Debroy. Currently serving as a Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA), Debroy has been appointed as the President of the Tripura BJP. This move is seen as an investment in the party's future leadership in the northeastern state.
In Punjab, the BJP has appointed Kewal Singh Dhillon as the new state president. Dhillon is a prominent Jat Sikh leader and a former MLA from Barnala. Having previously been a member of the Congress party before joining the BJP, Dhillon brings a wealth of political experience to his new role. He succeeds Sunil Jakhar and is tasked with the responsibility of strengthening the party's organizational base and expanding its reach across the state of Punjab.
On top of that, the party has appointed Dr. Archana Gupta as the President of the Haryana BJP. A well-known doctor by profession and an active political leader from Panipat, Dr. Gupta has a long history of service within the party and its affiliated organizations. Her previous roles include serving as the President of the BJP Mahila Morcha and as the State General Secretary. Also, she has held significant responsibilities within the Vishva Hindu Parishad (VHP). Her appointment highlights the party's focus on utilizing experienced leaders with strong grassroots connections and professional backgrounds to lead its state divisions.
