Last month, Maldivian President Mohammed Muizzu had asked India to withdraw all its military personnel from the island nation by March 15. 80 Indian soldiers are in Maldives

Currently, about 80 Indian military personnel are in Maldives, mainly to operate two helicopters and one aircraft. Through these, hundreds of medical rescue and humanitarian aid missions have been completed. Relations between the two countries came under strain after Muizzu came to power in November last year. After assuming office, Muizzu, widely considered a pro-China leader, said he would fulfill his election promise by expelling Indian military personnel from the country. Muizzu (45) had defeated pro-India candidate Ibrahim Mohammad Solih in the presidential elections held in September last year. Maldives is a major maritime neighbor of India in the Indian Ocean region and overall bilateral relations in the areas of defense and security had progressed under the previous (Maldives) government.

Muizzu had given India an ultimatum of March 15

Muizzu was sworn in as the new President of Maldives on 17 November. After this, he asked India to withdraw its military personnel from their country by March 15.
