New Delhi : The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Wednesday made a major change in its parliamentary board, giving a place to a Sikh leader for the first time. The name of Iqbal Singh Lalpura is included among the eleven members included in the parliamentary board from the party. Iqbal Singh Lalpura has been a well known name of Punjab. Former IPS as well. After retiring, Lalpura joined the BJP in 2012 and is currently the chairman of the National Commission for Minorities. There are many political implications behind the inclusion of Lalpura in the Parliamentary Board.

The appointment of Lalpura in the Parliamentary Board is considered very important in many ways. The inclusion of Lalpura in the Parliamentary Board holds political significance in Punjab. In Punjab, BJP has to face the displeasure of farmers. In such a situation, the focus of BJP is also towards Punjab. Lalpura is the second leader from Punjab who has been elected to a higher post.

BJP's eyes on 2024 Lok Sabha elections

Earlier, former state minister Vijay Sampla was made the chairman of the National Commission for Scheduled Castes. The displeasure of the farmers in Punjab was clearly visible in the assembly elections. Where, BJP was in the fray with former CM Amarinder Singh, yet could not reach power. BJP wants to strengthen its ground in Punjab before the Lok Sabha elections. According to political analysts, the inclusion of Iqbal Singh Lalpura in the Parliamentary Board is another big step of the BJP.

Faced with protests in Sangrur and Barnala

Lalpura, a resident of Ropar district of Punjab, had also visited many parts of Punjab repeatedly during the farmers' protest against the agriculture law. During this, he also had to face opposition in Sangrur and Barnala. Being a former IPS, Lalpura has a decent image in Punjab. Lalpura has also been a part of a group of three members formed to arrest Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale.

During the police service, there was also an additional inspector general of CID.

Lalpura was also the national spokesperson of the BJP before being appointed as the chairman of the National Commission for Minorities. According to media reports, Lalpura has served as an IPS officer in many districts of Punjab. Out of these, he has served as Amritsar SSP, Tarn Taran SSP and Additional Inspector General of CEID in Amritsar.
