The Indian Premier League match between Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) and Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) at the Eden Gardens stadium witnessed a major talking point during the early stages of the game. KKR opening batsman Finn Allen was dismissed in the second over of the innings, but the nature of his catch has sparked a heated debate among fans and experts alike. Allen, who managed to score only 9 runs, was sent back to the pavilion following a catch by LSG fielder Digvesh Singh Rathi at the third-man boundary. The incident has raised questions about the consistency of umpiring decisions in high-stakes matches.
The Dismissal and Field Action
The incident occurred on the fourth delivery of the second over, bowled by LSG pacer Prince Yadav. Finn Allen attempted a big shot but only managed to get a thick top edge. The ball flew high into the air towards the third-man region. Digvesh Singh Rathi, stationed near the ropes, tracked the ball and successfully completed the catch, while however, visual evidence suggested that Rathi was extremely close to the boundary line during the process of completing the catch, leading to immediate scrutiny from the dugout and spectators.
Boundary Line Proximity and Visual Evidence
As Rathi secured the ball, his feet were positioned dangerously close to the boundary cushions. Observers noted that the advertising curtain or the boundary rope appeared to move slightly as the fielder made the catch. In modern cricket, any contact with the boundary rope while in possession of the ball results in a six rather than a dismissal. The movement of the boundary padding raised immediate questions about whether Rathi’s foot had touched the rope while the ball was still in his hands, which would have rendered the catch invalid.
Umpiring Decision and Lack of Referral
Despite the closeness of the catch to the boundary, the on-field umpires didn't opt for a referral to the third umpire. According to standard protocols, close boundary catches are usually reviewed using multiple camera angles and ultra-motion technology to ensure the fielder's feet remain clear of the rope. In this instance, the field umpires deemed the catch clean on the spot, allowing the game to proceed without a formal review of the footage. This decision has become the primary source of the ongoing controversy.
Player Reaction and Departure
Finn Allen, the batsman involved, didn't wait for a formal review or protest the decision on the field. Immediately after the catch was taken, Allen began his walk back to the dugout. Reports suggest that had the batsman stayed or requested a check, the umpires might have been prompted to consult the television umpire, while allen’s quick departure meant the decision stood as called on the field, leaving KKR at a disadvantage early in their innings at their home ground after losing a key opener for just 9 runs.
