A large-scale protest by industrial workers demanding a hike in wages has brought traffic to a standstill in Noida on Monday. The demonstration, which began early in the morning, has affected all major entry points connecting Noida with Delhi and Ghaziabad. Thousands of workers have occupied key intersections, leading to massive congestion during peak office hours and causing significant distress to commuters across the National Capital Region (NCR).
Strategic Blockades on Major Arterial Roads
According to traffic officials, the protesters have blocked the road under the Sector 15 flyover, which is a critical link for commuters traveling between Delhi and Noida. The impact is visible on the DND Flyway and the Chilla Border, where vehicle movement has slowed down to a crawl. Similarly, the route from Delhi’s Ashram to Noida Sector 16 and Film City has seen kilometers-long queues of vehicles as protesters refused to clear the carriageways.
Gridlock at Sector 62 and Meerut Expressway
The situation is equally critical at the Sector 62 intersection near Fortis Hospital. Workers from various companies have staged a sit-in protest on the road connecting the Meerut Expressway to Noida’s industrial sectors. This has resulted in a complete halt of traffic coming from Ghaziabad. Reports indicate that commuters traveling from areas like Govindpuram are taking over two hours to reach the Noida entry gates, a journey that usually takes Notably less time.
Severe Impact on Commuters and Essential Services
The sudden blockade has left thousands of commuters stranded, including school children and office-goers, while many people were seen abandoning public transport and walking several kilometers to reach their destinations. The congestion has also spread to internal roads, including Rajnigandha Chowk and the areas surrounding Sector 18, as drivers attempted to find alternative routes to escape the primary bottlenecks.
Traffic Diversions and Police Deployment
In response to the escalating situation, the Noida Traffic Police has implemented several emergency diversions. Traffic is being diverted from under the Sector 59 Metro Station to ease the pressure on the main roads. However, these alternative routes are also experiencing heavy volume, leading to secondary jams. A heavy police contingent has been deployed at all major protest sites to maintain law and order and prevent any untoward incidents.
Ongoing Negotiations and Public Frustration
While the police are attempting to negotiate with the labor union leaders to clear the roads, the protesters remain firm on their demands for a salary increase. Commuters have expressed frustration over the lack of a pre-emptive traffic management plan by the administration. As of now, the standoff continues, and authorities are working to restore normalcy while ensuring the safety of both the protesters and the general public.
