Indian Railways has taken a big decision on Friday. Fulfilling the long pending demand, the post of 'Guard' has been renamed as 'Train Manager'. The Railway Ministry said that the issue of designation in the Railway Board was discussed in consultation with the recognized associations. The ministry said the new designation of 'Train Manager' is more in line with their existing duties and responsibilities. It also claimed to improve the motivation level of the employees.

The Ministry of Railways, in an order dated January 13, said that 'Assistant Guard' and 'Goods Guard' will now be known as 'Assistant Passenger Train Manager' and 'Goods Train Manager' respectively. 'Mail/Express Guard' shall be known as 'Mail/Express Train Manager'. Similarly 'Senior Goods Guard' and 'Senior Passenger Guard' have been rechristened as 'Senior Goods Train Manager' and 'Senior Passenger Train Manager' respectively.

Will the new designation also affect the pay scale?

The Ministry of Railways has made it clear that there will be no change in the pay scale due to the change of name of the post. The mode of recruitment, seniority and promotion will remain the same as before. There will be no change in them. "The revised designations shall not make any change in their pay level, method of recruitment, existing duties and responsibilities, seniority and avenues of promotion," the order said.

A senior Railway Ministry official told Hindustan Times that a train guard is actually in charge of the train concerned. Demand was raised that the existing designation has become obsolete. Another senior railway official said that 'train manager' would be an honorable post for them "so that they too can lead a dignified life in the society".
