According to a report by the Economic Times, Tesla plans to start its deliveries by the end of August 2025. The showroom will be open to VIPs and corporate partners for the initial weeks, but will be opened to the general public later.

According to a Bloomberg report, Tesla has already brought the first batch of Model Y rear-wheel drive units from its China-based factory to India. The Model Y, which is currently the world's best-selling electric car, will be Tesla's first product in India. The car is known for its great performance, modern technology, and premium design.

Model Y price and import duty

The base price of the Model Y is around Rs 27.7 lakh ($46,630) in the global market. However, its price in India is likely to be much higher due to import duty. India has a 70% import duty on fully built electric vehicles priced below $40,000. Apart from this, the price of Model Y can be much higher than in the US due to other taxes and duties. Nevertheless, given Tesla's brand value and the popularity of the Model Y, it could prove to be a strong contender in the Indian market.

Showroom plans in New Delhi too

After Mumbai, Tesla's second showroom is set to open in New Delhi by the end of July 2025. The move reflects Tesla's strategy to expand rapidly in India. The company aims to make its presence felt in major metropolises in the country, so as to reach more and more customers.
