Delhi: NCP chief Sharad Pawar has refused to be the candidate of opposition parties for the Presidential Elections 2022. West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and CPI(M) General Secretary Sitaram Yechury, who reached Delhi on Tuesday, tried to persuade him but he did not agree. Now the new names are likely to be discussed in the meeting to be held on Wednesday.

On Tuesday, Pawar met CPI general secretary D Raja, NCP leaders Praful Patel and PC Chacko, besides Mamata and Yechury, and informed them about his decision not to contest the elections. Yechury said after the meeting that other names are being discussed as candidates. At the same time, due to the unwell Congress President Sonia Gandhi, Pawar may be entrusted with the responsibility of talking to the opposition. On the other hand, sources in the opposition said that Pawar is unwilling to fight a contest in which he is sure to lose.

Mamta reached Delhi, meeting today

Mamta reached Delhi on Tuesday for a meeting of non-BJP parties regarding the presidential election. Mamta has urged the leaders of opposition parties to attend the meeting to be held on Wednesday to prepare a strategy for the presidential election. The Congress is also likely to attend the meeting, sources said.

Leader of Opposition in Rajya Sabha and Congress leaders Mallikarjun Kharge, Jairam Ramesh and Randeep Surjewala are likely to attend the meeting on behalf of the party. Yechury, on the other hand, said representations of all parties are likely to be present in the meeting. However, the chances of the Chief Ministers coming are slim. After this, the opposition will declare the candidate by holding another meeting from June 20-21.

CPI(M) and CPI will send MPs

CPI(M) and CPI will send their MPs to the opposition meeting. The CPI(M) will be represented in the meeting by party leader E Karim in the Rajya Sabha. However, both the Left parties had objected to Mamata's decision to call such a meeting.

The Rajya Sabha Secretariat has constituted a special cell for voting. PC Modi, Secretary General of the Rajya Sabha, has been appointed as the Returning Officer for the Presidential elections to be held on 18 July. He will also head this cell. Officer on Special Duty Mukul Pandey and Joint Secretary in Rajya Sabha Secretariat Surendra Kumar Tripathi are also part of this cell.

Enrollment process from today

The nomination process will start from Wednesday. The forms will be available in Parliament. The candidate will have to deposit a security deposit of Rs 15,000.
