NTA Restructuring: Government Appoints New Joint Directors and Secretaries Post NEET Leak

Following the NEET-UG 2026 paper leak controversy, the Indian government has overhauled the National Testing Agency's leadership by appointing four senior officials to key administrative roles to ensure transparency.

In a significant move to restore the integrity of national-level entrance examinations, the Government of India has initiated a major administrative overhaul within the National Testing Agency (NTA). This decision comes in the wake of the controversies surrounding the NEET-UG 2026 paper leak, which has sparked nationwide concerns regarding the transparency and security of the examination process. The Ministry of Personnel, Public Grievances and Pensions, through the Department of Personnel and Training (DoPT), has issued orders for the appointment of four senior officials to key positions within the agency.

New Appointments in NTA

The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) has approved the induction of two Joint Directors and two Joint Secretaries to the NTA. These appointments are seen as a strategic step to strengthen the administrative and operational framework of the agency, which is responsible for conducting some of the most critical competitive exams in the country, including NEET, JEE Main, and CUET, while the restructuring is aimed at enhancing the coordination and management of the NTA's vast examination network.

Akash Jain, an officer from the 2013 batch of the Indian Revenue Service (IRS), has been appointed as the Joint Director of the NTA. His appointment has been made through a lateral shift from his current government department. According to the official order, his tenure in this new role will continue until December 4, 2029. Joining him as a Joint Director is Aditya Rajendra Bhojgadhia, a 2013 batch officer of the Indian Audit and Accounts Service (IA&AS). Bhojgadhia has also been moved via a lateral shift and is scheduled to serve in the NTA until May 16, 2028.

Strengthening the Secretariat

In addition to the Joint Directors, the government has appointed two experienced officers to the post of Joint Secretary. Anuja Bapat, a 1998 batch officer of the Indian Statistical Service (ISS), has been designated as Joint Secretary for a period of 5 years. Alongside her, Ruchita Vij, a 2004 batch IRS officer, has also been appointed as Joint Secretary for a 5 year term. These senior officials are expected to bring their expertise in statistics, revenue, and auditing to enhance the administrative functions of the agency.

Context of the NEET Controversy

The restructuring follows the massive outcry over the NEET-UG 2026 examination held on May 3. Allegations of a paper leak led to the cancellation of the initial results and a subsequent investigation by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). The government has scheduled a re-examination for June 21 to ensure that deserving candidates aren't disadvantaged by the security breach. The NTA has been under intense scrutiny, and these new appointments are part of a broader effort to implement more strong protocols and ensure that future examinations are conducted with the highest level of transparency and fairness.

The Department of Higher Education, under which the NTA operates, is working closely with the new appointees to streamline the examination process. The goal is to rebuild public trust in the agency and ensure that the millions of students who appear for these exams every year can do so in a secure and merit-based environment. The new leadership will be tasked with overseeing the upcoming re-examinations and ensuring that no further lapses occur in the testing cycle.
